Player Ratings: Celtic 0-3 Juventus

The Turin side secured a superb first-leg victory in Glasgow to leave Neil Lennon's side needing a miracle to qualify for the last eight of the Champions League

By Matthew Harold

  • Fraser Forster

    Fraser Forster

The English goalkeeper didn't have much to do throughout the game and was largely let down by his defence for the goals.

  • E. Izaguirre

    E. Izaguirre

Looked to get forward as much as possible and floated in a couple of crosses that Commons could have finished

  • E. Ambrose

    E. Ambrose Flop of the Match

Had a night to forget after his heroics in South Africa, as he made mistake after mistake and missed an easy header.

    Kelvin Wilson

Was having to do the job of two players as he filled in for the ineffective Ambrose. Was unlucky not to prevent the first goal and stood solid throughout.

  • Charles Mulgrew

    Charles Mulgrew

Playing in the midfield area, he looked to stop Juventus from going forward, which meant that he could not be as effective in an attacking sense.

  • M. Lustig

    M. Lustig

The Swedish defender looked good on the right-hand side of the defence and was able to move forward and whip in crosses. Was eventually forced off with injury in the second half, being replaced by Matthews.

  • Scott Brown

    Scott Brown

Was a willing runner for Celtic, showing all of his determination in a real captain's performance. Went to war with any Juventus player who challenged him.

  • Kris Commons

    Kris Commons

Failed to find the target with countless chances in the first half but found space well on several occasions.

    James Forrest

Failed to get in behind the Juventus defence as much as he would have liked upon his return to the line-up.

  • Victor Wanyama

    Victor Wanyama

The Kenyan midfielder did not emulate his past Champions League form and was overrun in the middle of the park.

  • Gary Hooper

    Gary Hooper

Played as the lone frontman and looked to get in behind the defence, but wasn't as effective as he usually is.

    Gianluigi Buffon

Was peppered with shots from range in the early stages before being tested aerially wiith high, hanging crosses. The 35-year-old remained composed throughout, however, and his confidence comforted the Juve defence.

  • Martín Cáceres

    Martín Cáceres

Came in for Chiellini and performed excellently on the left of the back three. Showed great resilience in the face of the marauding Brown and Wanyama, as well as right-back Lustig when he scampered forward into wide positions.

  • Andrea Barzagli

Andrea Barzagli Top of the Match

Operated off the right of the back three and was regularly pulled out into the channels by Mulgrew and Izaguirre but was stout with his defending and firm in the tackle. Even when Celtic threatened to get in behind him, he showed awareness and pace to get back and snuff out any chances.

  • Leonardo Bonucci
    7
    0
    3.50

    Leonardo Bonucci

Didn't have a real aerial concern to worry about after Samaras was ruled out of the match but stuck to Hooper like glue and prevented the Englishman from getting any meaningful shots off.

  • Stephan Lichtsteiner

    3.00

    Stephan Lichtsteiner

Was booked for a spot of wrestling in the box as he tried to prevent Hooper from impeding Buffon and was perhaps fortunate not to concede a spot-kick. Aside from his penalty box antics, he assisted Barzagli well at right-back. Didn't get forward as much and as well as he can but that would not have bothered him on a triumphant night in Glasgow.

  • Federico Peluso

    Federico Peluso

The left wing-back slotted alongside Caceres well when Celtic pushed forward and contained Lustig for the most part. Played a lovely ball over the top of Ambrose for Matri to open the scoring. Found the intensity of the match trying, particularly after the fresh legs of Matthews were introduced and was eventually replaced by Padoin with 20 minutes to go.

  • Claudio Marchisio
    9
    0

    Claudio Marchisio

Was on hand to ensure Juve took the lead in the third minute, although the goal will go down as Matri's. Battled away in midfield for an overwhelming half of Celtic pressure. Stood firm alongside Pirlo and Vidal though, and grew into the game. His off the ball movement caused the tiring Bhoys midfield problems in the latter stages and he arrived on hand to fire Matri's pass beyond Forster, before sliding Vucinic in on goal in the dying stages.

  • Andrea Pirlo
    6
    1
    3.00

    Andrea Pirlo

Found the pace of Celtic's harrying repressive in a difficult game for the playmaker. Improved as the game went on and did spray some trademark passes into the wide areas, but was caught in possession more often than he would like as Brown and Wanyama barrelled into him. Not his finest evening, though certainly not a letdown.

  • Arturo Vidal

    Arturo Vidal

Had to do his fair share of grafting in the midfield and, though he gave an understated performance, the Chilean got about the pitch well, won his tackles and retained possession more often than not. Had two strikes at goal but both off target.

  • Mirko Vučinić
    6

    Mirko Vučinić

The Montenegrin has a habit of floating in and out of matches and that was certainly the case for much of the contest until he popped up in the Celtic box in the 83rd minute to stroke home Juve's third goal. His movement can cause problems but he lacked the raw pace to trouble a defence that played such a dangerously high line.

  • Alessandro Matri
    6
    1
    3.50

    Alessandro Matri

Transferred his domestic form to the European stage effortlessly as he latched on to Peluso's through ball to poke under Forster and over the line for the opening goal. Fell back into a left-wing position at times and played a very disciplined role after giving his side the lead. Then, he struck again with a classy touch around the corner to the onrushing Marchisio.

Late substitute brought on to inject energy into the final stages.

    Simone Padoin

Came on for the cramp-stricken Peluso and was initially troubled by Matthews until he found his bearings.

  • Nicolas Anelka

    Nicolas Anelka

Late cameo almost saw him lay on a fourth with a neat cutback, but it was slightly behind his onrushing team-mate.
