Kelantan’s credentials as a domestic footballing force will be put to test when they take on Selangor in the first leg of the Malaysia Cup semi-final at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium in Kota Bharu tomorrow (Saturday).
The Red Warriors, whose dream of completing a treble for the first time in their history depends on winning the trophy, know that they must be at their best against the visitors to get a comfortable lead to take to Shah Alam for the return leg. Coach Bojan Hodak confirmed yesterday that winger S.Chanturu will be the only player missing due to an injury. Otherwise, the Croatian has a full squad to choose from.
Selangor, the record winners of the competition, have been improving each game after an unconvincing start in the competition and they dispatched Johor FC comfortably in the quarter-finals. The Red Giants have not reported anything on the injury front, meaning they will travel to the east coast with a strong squad. National midfielder K.Gurusamy remains a long-term absentee though.
Kelantan have not lost a single game at home in all competitions this season while Selangor last tasted victory at their opponent’s ground 10 years ago.
Their most recent meeting however, will be remembered for the wrong reasons. Kelantan’s Muhammad Ghaddar and Selangor duo Amri Yahyah and Bunyamin Omar were punished by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) with suspensions and fines following an ugly off-the ball incident in a league match in June.
