Toche's goal cancels out Michael Dawson's opener as Andre Villas-Boas is denied a first win in Europe as Spurs boss by a resilient Greek side

    Orestis Karnezis

Couldn't do an awful lot for Spurs' opener, but dealt with most threats pretty well. A calm presence at the back, he made a number of decent saves and came off his line to claim several crosses.

  • Andre Pinto

    Andre Pinto

Handled the ball in the opening minutes and was lucky to escape without conceding a penalty. Largely dealt with the threat of Defoe well, though conceded a few sloppy free-kicks when Spurs' diminutive forward had dropped deep.

  • Giourkas Seitaridis

Giourkas Seitaridis Top of the Match

Struggled to contain Bale in the first half but, when the opportunity presented itself, got forward well. Played a defence splitting pass between Spurs' centre-backs from which Toche equalised. Also created Panathinaikos' best chance of the first half with a dangerous run and cross that was intercepted by Lloris.

  • Loukas Vyntra

    Loukas Vyntra

Lost Dawson for the Tottenham captain's goal, allowing the centre-back an uncontested header. But he dealt with the pace of Lennon well, never allowing the winger to get in behind him. On the sole occasion that Lennon did beat him, he cynically dragged back the winger, conceding a yellow card in the process.

  • Konstantinos Triandafillopulos

    Konstantinos Triandafillopulos

Struggled to deal with Defoe's pace, allowing Tottenham's forward to burst past him down the outside and fire a shot over the bar. But was otherwise untroubled, especially when the game was in front of him, and showed a lot of power and strength.

  • Vitolo

    3.00

    Vitolo

Patrolled the space in front of his defence, tracked Dempsey well with the American unable to affect the game. Generally tidy if conservative on the ball. Powerless to stop Dembele when the Belgian burst forward.

  • Lazaros Christodoulopoulos

    Lazaros Christodoulopoulos

Nominally on the left wing, he drifted infield in support of Toche. Found little gaps in Tottenham's defence, dropping into space. Headed against the post but was flagged offside.

  • Zeca

    Zeca

Drifted in and out of the match, playing a more attacking role than Vitolo or Marinos. Dropped deeper when Sissoko came on. Hit and miss with his passing.

  • Stergos Marinos

Stergos Marinos Flop of the Match

Unable to stifle the power and dribbling ability of Dembele, who floated past the Greek midfielder. Often wayward with his passing, Marinos was replaced at half-time by Sissoko.

  • Quincy Owusu-Abeyie

    Quincy Owusu-Abeyie

Panathinaikos' brightest player in the first half. Came inside, committed Vertonghen, ran at the Spurs defence, but lacked an end product. Switched flanks and attacked Walker, beating him with ease to play a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Was replaced in stoppage time.

  • Toché

    Toché

Had very little supply and was bullied physically by Spurs centre-back partnership for much of the match. But took his goal extremely well, flicking Seitaridis' pass into the back of net via the post. Caused more harm than good on defensive set-pieces, dropping deep and playing Spurs onside.

Replaced Quincy with seconds left. Didn't even touch the ball.

  • Charalampos Mavrias

    Charalampos Mavrias

Came on with five minutes of the match remaining and looked quite lively. Found space and drove at Vertonghen when he received the ball. His end product let him down.

  • Ibrahim Sissoko

    Ibrahim Sissoko

Replaced Marinos at half-time. Brought energy, speed and tenacity to the Greek side, but little end product. Burst through on goal but was prevented from shooting by an excellent saving challenge from Walker. Galvanised the side and played a large part in their comeback.

  • Hugo Lloris

    2.50

    Hugo Lloris

Dropped a tame cross in the first half that prompted a moment of panic, but was otherwise commanding and proactive when needed, off his line quickly to sweep up danger or claim crosses. Powerless to stop Toche's shot from finding the bottom corner.

  • Jan Vertonghen

    Jan Vertonghen

Much of Panathaniakos' first half joy came down Vertonghen's flank, with Seitaridis breaking into the space the Belgian allowed to develop. But he got forward well, winning the free-kick from which Spurs opened the scoring. Played a delightful pass to put Defoe though on goal, but the latter was just offside.

  • Michael Dawson

    Michael Dawson

Didn't always look especially comfortable on the ball, conceding possession with several loose long balls. Took his goal well, glancing Huddlestone's cross into the far corner. Poor positioning and a lack of pace allowed Toche to get on the end of Seitaridis' through-ball.

  • Kyle Walker
    2

    3.00

    Kyle Walker

Contributed to some nervy moments for Spurs, not always composed when facing his own goal. Made an excellent recovery challenge to prevent Sissoko from getting a shot away when clean through.

  • Steven Caulker

    1
    2.50

    Steven Caulker

His height and power were a threat at set-pieces. More composed and considered on the ball than his central defensive partner, and showed real confidence to carry the ball out of defence. Pushed slightly too high for the Greek's equaliser, allowing space in behind.

  • Clint Dempsey

    2.50

    Clint Dempsey

Worked hard but was largely on the periphery of Spurs's play. Went close with a free-kick from long range that narrowly missed the angle of the crossbar. Was replaced by Sigurdsson midway through the second half.

  • Tom Huddlestone

    Tom Huddlestone

A tad ponderous in midfield, it took him a while to find his passing range. Evidently tasked with feeding Bale and Lennon out wide. Provided the assists for Dawson's opener with a floated free-kick. Had a fierce volley saved well by Karnezis. Visibly tired as the match wore on and was replaced by Sandro.

  • Aaron Lennon

    2.50

    Aaron Lennon

Quite ineffective out wide and was largely kept under wraps by the Panathinaikos left-back, but had more joy when he drifted into the middle. Showed his incredible speed to drive towards the Greek defence before hitting a tame effort towards goal. Won a free-kick when Vyntra dragged him down on the edge of the area. Was replaced with 15 minutes remaining by Townsend.

  • Gareth Bale

    Gareth Bale

Had the better of Seitaridis in the first half, using his pace and power to leave the Greek right-back eating his dust. But struggled to track or deal with Seitaridis' runs from deep, and picked up a yellow card for a late challenge on the full-back. His influenced waned in the second half.

  • Moussa Dembele
    3

    3.50

    Moussa Dembele

Danced and glided past the Greek midfield, but showed his strength and power too. Made a number of excellent, gritty challenges to win back possession for his side and used the ball well. Perhaps didn't do enough to unlock the Greek defence in the final third.

  • Jermain Defoe
    2

    3.00

    Jermain Defoe

Led the line well, pulling off to the channels to great effect. Perhaps too keen to shoot, but linked play nicely on occasion. Drew a number of fouls, highlighting his improvement with his back to goal. Blasted a good chance over the bar from inside the box.

Substitutions

  • Gylfi Sigurdsson

    Gylfi Sigurdsson

Came on for Dempsey with just under half an hour of the match remaining. Worked hard, closed down with tenacity, but was unable to get on the ball in dangerous areas.

  • Sandro

    Sandro

Replaced Huddlestone with ten minutes remaining.

  • Andros Townsend

    Andros Townsend

With 15 minutes left, he came on for Lennon on the right wing. Was rarely supplied in the final third and had little impact on the match.
