Sylvain Marveaux was the star of the show for the Magpies while Danilo Dias and Fidelis were impressive for the Portuguese side as they battled back to earn a point

The captain continues to sit out his suspension in the Premier League, but came back for this tie, he couldn't get near Fidelis for the goal but was solid for the majority of the game.

Danny Simpson Flop of the Match

Struggled to get forward and was the weak link in Newcastle's defence. A difficult evening for the right-back.

Making this 200th appearance for the club and was generally composed, but was left for dead by Fidelis who went on to score.

    Hatem Ben Arfa

The winger's night was cut short just after the half-hour mark, limping down the tunnel holding his hamstring, after a late challenge in the build-up to Papiss Cisse's offside 'goal'. Provided the assist for Marveaux's opener.

The holding midfielder got forward a lot more than his partner Vurnon Anita and almost got on the score sheet. His shot was parried well by Romain Salin. The Burundian did his best to aid his side's cause defensively, but was overrun in the second half as Maritimo controlled proceedings.

  • Sylvain Marveaux

    Sylvain Marveaux

Playing on the right of an attacking three-man midfield behind Papiss Cisse, he was a constant threat to Joao Diogo. The winger opened his Newcastle account with an effort out of his own working. He curled a run away from goal before bending his way back around the defence and slotted home with his favoured left foot.

  • Papiss Cissé

    Papiss Cissé

The striker has been struggling for form but what he lacked in goals he more than made up work-rate. He popped up in the box clearing the ball at one point and linked up well with his midfield. The performance only lacked a goal but to his credit he did have the ball in the back of the net but he was ruled to be offside.

Produced an energetic display but was unable to create much in the way of goalscoring opportunities. Substituted late in the second half.

Did his best to get forward but his efforts to provide the Magpies with a creative outlet but found his efforts stymied. The midfielder looked good on the ball and was one of their better performers in the second period.

Came on in the closing stages of the second half and had little chance to make a significant impact.

    Demba Ba

Replaced Papiss Cisse and close with a number of chances. Unlucky not to have scored with a shot that was blocked at the near post.

    Romain Salin

Great early save from Davide Santon's shot from range, re-adjusting his body mid-air to claw it way and was aware of danger all night. There was not much he could do for Sylvain Marveaux's goal but he was resolute throughout the game.

    João Diogo Gomes de Freitas

Making his first appearance this season, Diogo got forward once or twice whilst trying to help out Danilo Dias. The pair linked up well with each other but had a rather determined Davide Santon to contend with.

    Márcio Rozário

Coped well with first Papiss Cisse and then Demba Ba. Newcastle's one-man system allowed Maritimo to have two defenders on one striker.

    Valentin Roberge

Like his centre-back partner, dealt well with one striker, constantly pushing the pair further back. Made an important block to deny Demba Ba at the far post when it looked like a tap-in.

The full-back caused Danny Simpson problems in the first-half and tested Tim Krul early on after turning the full-back inside out but the goalkeeper held firm.

The captain for the night made a late tackle in the box to deny a Danny Simpson in the second-half when Newcastle were pushing for a winner and was consistent throughout.

    João Luiz Ramires Vieira

Linked up well between Joao Diogo and Danilo Dias but the main play was from the man in front of him. Quiet but effective.

    David Simao

He looked a real player all night. He wasn't scared off the bright lights of St James' Park and had some skills and tricks up his sleeve. Got forward as much as he could but couldn't make anything happen.

The striker went close with a diving header from a Danilo Dias long, testing cross which went wide of the post but did not offer much else.

    Adilson Tibes Granemann

Very quiet in his second outing in the starting line-up this season and was substituted early in the second-half for Fidelis. He was a surprise choice amongst the Portuguese media.

  • Danilo Dias

Danilo Dias Top of the Match

Maritimo's best player. Matched Newcastle's Papiss Cisse for work rate, dropping deeper to pick the ball up before trying to take Davide Santon on. It was one of the better duels of the night, and one that was just shaded by the Magpies man. He had most of the visitors' best chances and went close with a fine drive that went just wide.

The game passed him by when he came as a second-half substitute as Danilo Dias took control of the game.

  • Fidelis

    Fidelis

Came off the bench and did more than Adilson had done in an hour. Proved to be a real threat, attacking Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini every time he could. He was rewarded with a goal when he strolled past Danny Simpson, Taylor and Coloccini before blasting through the legs of Tim Krul.
