  Until the final half-hour he did not have much to do, but was bombarded by the Blues in the game's closing stages, yet he came out on top. The former Hull City man made a whole host of great saves to secure the three points.

  Jonas Olsson

  Looked solid for much of the match, although he always looks as though he has a mistake or two in him. Won a number of defensive headers and dominated Torres throughout. His use of possession was generally very good, and he was essential to West Brom halting Chelsea’s late onslaught.

  Liam Ridgewell

  The veteran defended to mixed success today. First of all, he did brilliantly to clear a goalbound Bertrand shot off the line and put in some blocks, but when players ran at him he was too easily beaten, while he failed to stop the cross in for Hazard’s goal. He has seen better days.

  Billy Jones

  Most of Chelsea’s threat came down his side and the visitors seemed to exploit that with both Moses and Bertrand ganging up on him at times. Also had a hand in Chelsea’s equaliser as Hazard’s header found its way into the goal via his shoulder.

  Sebastien Gabriel Tamaş

  Like Olsson, was a rock at the heart of the West Brom defence, winning towering header after towering header. As the match went on, he and his colleagues had to withstand heavy pressure, but they held on, with many-a-cross getting dealt with by the Romanian.

  Claudio Yacob

  Since signing from Racing Club in the summer, the Argentine has gained many admirers, and understandably so. On the ball he is excellent, his passing is precise and he provides a great alternative to the more robust Mulumbu. Today he was more defensive minded, but still put in a good shift.

  James Morrison

  The former Middlesbrough man is having an excellent season so far and he picked up another assist today, picking Long out in the area before supplying a masterful delivery. Got around the pitch well, putting his foot in and always tried to play Long in behind the defence. Good showing again.

  Youssouf Mulumbu

  Early on he struggled to impose himself, but he became more influential as play went on, putting in numerous tackles as well as bursting forward whenever the opportunity arose. Some of his passing was a bit wayward, but his overall play was very good.

  Zoltán Gera

  Considering his company in attack, the Hungarian was rather quiet. Most of West Brom’s attacking was localised to the right-hand side. He did, however, play a key role in Long’s opening goal, as he produced an excellent pass to Morrison.

  Shane Long Top of the Match

  Very good performance from the Irishman. His movement was a constant problem for the Chelsea defence, particularly for Luiz, who he gave the run-around and slipped away from to open the scoring. He also troubled Cahill when up against him and he fully deserved his goal.

  Peter Odemwingie

  The Nigerian can be erratic and often frustrates, but had a good afternoon here. He was involved in the majority of West Brom’s attacks, Bertrand could rarely get close to him and he headed in the winner. Despite all the positives, he probably should have given his right-back Billy Jones a little more support.

  Hardly his most convincing of matches. He might think he could have done better from Shane Long’s goal as he got a touch to the ball, although there was not a great deal he could do about Odemwingie’s header.

  David Luiz Flop of the Match

  Not a good performance by Luiz. He could not contend with Long’s movement throughout, losing him for the Irishman’s goal, and failed to cope with him on almost every occasion and eventually let Cahill try his luck with the forward.

  Gary Cahill

  Certainly the more composed of the two Chelsea centre-backs, but he did not fair a whole lot better than Luiz did against Long. On one occasion, the striker out-muscled him before beating him on the turn. The England international was better after the break, but looked far from comfortable when West Brom attacked.

  Solid enough performance from the Spaniard. West Brom rarely attacked down his side, meaning he was comfortable in defence. He also got forward whenever he could, and played an important role in Hazard’s equaliser.

  Attacked far better than he defended. Most of West Brom’s offensive moves came down Bertrand’s side and he made precious few tackles. He failed to close down the cross for Odemwingie’s goal and was generally suspect at the back.

  His passing was accurate enough, but when Chelsea did not have the ball, Romeu was effectively a passenger, rarely breaking up the play or making meaningful tackles. Eventually hooked for Oscar in the second half.

  Started well, putting in tackles and starting attacking moves off, but for long periods he found himself unable to deal with Mulumbu and Yacob, often getting caught out of position by their passing.

  Looked to be lacking confidence at times as on a number of occasions he looked reluctant to beat his man, but he did liven up a bit after the break and could have won a penalty after Yacob bundled him over. With both Mata and Oscar not starting this was an opportunity for Moses to prove he is worthy of a place alongside them, rather than in reserve. He did little to convince today.

  Got on the end of Azpilicueta's cross to score a rare headed goal, but faded as the game went on, only sparking back into life as the Blues desperately sought a way back into the tie.

  The mystery of Torres continues to confuse many. Once again he was far from his best as he was dominated by Olsson. He was given 15 minutes after the break to see if he could improve, but he could not and was replaced by Juan Mata.

  Daniel Sturridge

  With Mata and Oscar rested for Juventus in midweek, Sturridge was given a rare starting chance, but he did not grasp it with both hands. In the first half he was virtually anonymous, while in the second half his influence was more potent, but not much more effective and he should have levelled the scores late on, but his poor finish was saved well by Myhill.
