  Roundly awful in open play, overrun by England and unable to respond with a bullish tackle or composed pass when he had the chance. One neat cross that Armas headed wide just before half-time but one cross does not a performance make.

  Industry and energy down the left offered a different option to Oxlade-Chamberlain's desire to cut inside with his right foot. Broke his international duck in the streakiest of ways - his free kick's deflection off the wall was massive - but very encouraging from the Everton man.

  An excellent performance from the midfielder, Moldova's physically unimposing engine room allowing him the time to make his trademark runs forward, one of which was rewarded with the second. His eighth penalty scored for England makes him the country's most successful ever.

  Sometimes criticised at international level but his scurrying enthusiasm was a big part of England's first-half dominance. His first goal for the Three Lions, a powerful finish arriving late, was well deserved.

  Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Top of the Match

  England’s best player for the fewer-than-60 minutes for which he was on the pitch. Bursting with endeavour, the Arsenal youngster was a constant thorn coming inside from the left wing, rewarded when Defoe finished from his intelligent through-ball. Taken off, surely, just to keep him as fresh as possible for Ukraine.

  Guilty of missing a pretty easy chance in the opening 10 minutes but his running dragged the hapless Moldovan defenders in every direction. His strike for the goal should have been saved but a very good 50th cap for the Tottenham man.
