All over! A superb win for Jurgen Klinsmann, who has secured one of the best results in American football history. You can't say they don't deserve it after the way they defended, but for the Italians, there has to be concern over the cutting edge shown in the final third. As always, thanks for joining us here on Goal.com. See you again.
90′ +3
Substitution
Clint Dempsey
Edson Buddle
90′ +3
A sliding Bradley takes all the sting out of another Montolivo drive, deflecting the ball gently into Tim Howard's gloves. That could well be that.
90′ +2
Is that the last chance? Pazzini lays the ball off to Montolivo on the edge of the area, but his strike is always curving wide. Edson Buddle of LA Galaxy replaces Clint Dempsey for the USA.
90′ +1
There is a queue waiting for every ball into the USA box, but every time it is an American head that makes the clearance. For all their possession, the Italians have not created an outstanding chance tonight.
89′
Terrence Boyd makes 50 yards as he carries the ball at the Italian defence with purpose. At the end, however, he just stops running and loses the ball. Could have made a name for himself there. We will have four added minutes here.
88′
De Rossi tries a cheeky flick into the area. Easily cleared by the defence. Are the Italians going to run out of ideas?
87′
That probably isn't a free kick either, as Ogbonna slides in to win the ball from Daniel Williams. Some much needed relief for the USA.
86′
Fabio Borini is harshly judged to have fouled Spector as he chases the ball out wide. The home side are starting to look a little frustrated now.
85′
This is relentless. Ignazio Abate runs on to another exquisite Pirlo pass, and his cross is turned away Cherundolo. Very good reading of the play by the Hannover centre back.
83′
Some patient build up from Italy that switches from flank to flank, but when it comes to the killer pass, the ball is given away. This time Jonathan Spector reacts quickest to head clear De Rossi's weak chip.
81′
Is this going to be Italy's second straight international defeat at home? The USA defence, with the excellent Bradley shielding them, are not giving their opponents a look-in at present.
80′
Easy save for Howard as Borini cannot quite get enough on his volleyed effort, which was delivered to him a pace. USA struggling to clear their lines at present as Italy start to turn the screw.
79′
Substitution
Jozy Altidore
Terrence Boyd
78′
Jurgen Klinsmann brings on Borrusia Dortmund striker Terrence Boyd, the young man replacing Jozy Altidore, who has worked tirelessly in the lone striker role tonight.
77′
Substitution
Fabian Johnson
Jonathan Spector
77′
Carlos Bocanegra does tremendously well to deflect a cross over his own far, with at least two Italian forwards charging in to meet it. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
76′
Jonathan Spector is on at left back for the USA, replacing Fabian Johnson. Like-for-like swap there, and Klinsmann will be hoping for more of the same from the Birmingham City man.
74′
Italy's passes are not finding their mark. Every time the ball is played forward, Bocanegra and Cherundolo step in to snuff out the attacks. No sign of an Italy breakthrough at present.
73′
Substitution
Brek Shea
Sacha Kljestan
72′
A first change for the USA sees Anderlecht's Sacha Kljestan replace Brek Shea, who has looked lively on the left hand side tonight.
71′
Substitution
Claudio Marchisio
Ignazio Abate
71′
Substitution
Christian Maggio
Daniele De Rossi
70′
The final two substitutions for Italy are made. Christian Maggio is replaced by Milan's Ignazio Abate, and Daniele De Rossi replaces Claudio Marchisio. The Roma man should provide a bit more drive to the midfield here.
68′
Yellow Card Carlos Bocanegra
68′
Excellent tackle. Sebastian Giovinco looks like he can beat players at will out wide, and it takes a last-ditch tackle from Michael Bradley to stop him. Top stuff again from the Chievo man.
67′
Like London buses. Carlos Bocanegra dives into Pazzini there, and gets nowhere near the ball. Unsurprisingly, he is cautioned for his trouble. Pazzini is underneath the resulting free kick, but can't get enough on his header to direct the ball goalwards.
66′
Yellow Card Giorgio Chiellini
66′
Altidore absolutely dominates Giorgio Chiellini there. He is hauled down, earning the Juventus defender the first booking of the night.
65′
Michael Bradley has quietly grown in stature during this game. The bald-headed midfielder can really pick a pass, and is driving his team forward when they have a chance to break. A very good outlet to have.
64′
Montolivo tries another long ball that is easily headed away. Time to try something on the deck? I think so.
62′
The two substitutes nearly combine to level the game. Pazzini jinks past a few challenges, and his pull-back is struck first time by Fabio Borini. It's just the right height for Tim Howard though. No debut goal there.
60′
It could be backs to the wall for Jurgen Klinsmann's side now. The Italians are dictating possession in midfield, but at the moment, cannot find a way through. With three strikers on the field, you feel the chances will soon come.
58′
Substitution
Alessandro Matri
Fabio Borini
58′
Substitution
Thiago Motta
Giampaolo Pazzini
58′
Another double change from Italy. Matri and Motta are removed; on comes Giampaolo Pazzini of Inter and, making his debut, Fabio Borini. I'm not surprised to see the former Swansea man make an appearance here.
56′
Well well well. The US get their reward for a stern defensive showing, and may be about to spring a surprise. Suddenly, the Italians look unsure at the back, and Brek Shea's cross is scrambled clear by Ogbonna. Might have been 2-0.
55′
Assist Jozy Altidore
55′
Goal Clint Dempsey
GOOOOAAAALL USA. Altidore does superbly to hold the ball up, and his lay-off finds Clint Dempsey, who lashes a left-foot drive past Buffon. Against the run of play, the away side lead.
GOOOOAAAALL USA. Altidore does superbly to hold the ball up, and his lay-off finds Clint Dempsey, who lashes a left-foot drive past Buffon. Against the run of play, the away side lead.
52′
It looks like Ogbonna has gone out to left back, with Montolivo taking Motta's place behind the front two. This should at least give the Americans something to think about.
51′
Another offside. This time, it is Matri who has stepped just too far forward to meet Thiago Motta's excellent swept pass. All very tight decisions so far; are the US defence playing a risky game or are the Italians being complacent? You decide.
49′
Giovinco offside again. Some dangerous movement from the Parma man, but he will need to time those runs just a tad better if he is to notch his first goal for his country.
48′
Giovinco is very nearly onside as he collects Pirlo's ball to volley at Howard. He is, however, rightly flagged.
47′
Italy look to be stepping up here. Andrea Barzagli strides out of defence and attempts to pick out Giovinco with a high ball. Headed clear by Cherundolo.
46′
Substitution
Antonio Nocerino
Riccardo Montolivo
46′
Substitution
Domenico Criscito
Giorgio Chiellini
46′
The US get us back underway. Two changes for Italy, Ricardo Montolivo and Giorgio Chiellini replace Criscito and Nocerino.
@patcammisuli has a fair question - 'What have the US forwards done?' The answer is, not a whole lot, but with the presence of Altidore means the away side can hold the ball up. Giovinco and Matri just look a tad lightweight to me.
Who would you like to see introduced in the second half? Are the Italian front two doing enough? Let's hear your thoughts - @woodstome on Twitter.
And there is half time. Italy with the majority of the possession, but the USA are more than holding their own. In fact, could a first ever win over La Nazionale be on the cards? Join me in 15 to find out.
43′
Best shot of the night from the Azzurri, but Thiago Motta's half-volley is straight at Howard. Looks like Italy will be going into half time frustrated by a very well organised US side.
42′
Now it's Matri's turn to try and create something out wide, but after three or four turns he gives the ball away. I would be surprised if Prandelli hasn't noticed the dominance of the American defence so far.
40′
Giovinco and Matri link up well on the edge of the area, but then the ball is played to Pirlo and his cross is easily gathered. There just isn't a presence in the penalty area to win that type of ball.
38′
Twinkle-toed stuff from Giovinco, who dances past three challenges before being eventually blocked. The problem is, with him out on the wing, there is little in the box for Italy if he is able to get a cross over.
37′
Oooh! That's a real piledriver. Clint Dempsey absolutely leathers it straight at Buffon, who palms the ball up into the air. One foot either side, and the USA would be leading.
35′
Altidore is brought down on the edge of the penalty area. Free kick to the States...
34′
Worth a go. Dominico Criscito receives the ball 30 yards out, and pings a speculative long-range shot that Tim Howard saves comfortably.
33′
The US may be getting wise to those long balls over the top. Cherundolo watches Giovinco's run carefully and is across to calmly intercept. If they get that right, they have every reason to feel they are the better team here.
31′
Corner to Italy, and what do you know? Pirlo hits the ball hopelessly long and out of play. First time for everything.
30′
Christian Maggio is getting plenty of joy in the attacking third. Playing much more as a winger at present, and sees another cross blocked by the US defence.
28′
We're back underway, and Giovinco is buzzing around the USA defence again as he attempts to wriggle his way into the area. Carlos Bocanegra does well to tackle and brings the ball away.
27′
Altidore is down with a hand injury so we have a break in play here. What do you make of the game so far? Tweet me at @woodstome with your thoughts...
26′
That was almost a great opening for Brek Shea. He receives Maurice Edu's through-ball and his first touch is just, just too heavy to keep the ball away from Buffon. Just a glimmer of what the winger may be able to do.
25′
The ball is in the net... but Matri is well offside as he receives Pirlo's ball. Still got a nice cheer though.
24′
The Italians move the ball around midfield with pace, but again the ball is lost as soon as it finds its way upfront. USA break again.
23′
Corner for USA, Cherundolo knocking the ball against Ogbonna. After several attempts, the Italian defence clears Michael Bradley's kick.
22′
Another fabulous ball from Pirlo, and another offside. This time Pirlo's chip falls onto Giovinco's head, only for the referee to blow his whistle. Again, he lost his marker very easily.
21′
Maurice Edu makes an early claim for worst shot of the evening, dragging a 30-foot shot fully 20 yards wide.
18′
First shot on target for Italy. Giovinco pulls away from Bocanegra to win another long ball, and his left foot strike stings the palms of Tim Howard. The US defence may have the physical edge, but will need to watch the pace of this front two.
17′
What a ball from Pirlo, one of the best passers in the game. His 50 yard ball is absolutely perfect for Giovinco, who is immediately flagged offside. Such a shame.
16′
Conversely, the ball is not sticking too well upfront for the Italians. Giovinco and Matri together probably weight as much as either one of the centre backs they are up against.
15′
Nice hold up play from Altidore, as he holds off Ogbonna before releasing Shea, whose cross is cut out. I do like the look of this American forward line, good combination of pace and power.
13′
Thiago Motta, playing just behind the front two, attempts to pick out Maggio but his pass is intercepted. Is the PSG man a good fit in this position? Time will tell.
11′
Jozy Altidore has his first run in against Andrea Barzagli on the near touchline, and is just about pulled out of play by the Juventus player. Could be a good physical tussle, that one.
9′
Fabian Johnson almost creates an opening for Brek Shea, but the Dallas man pulls his left-foot shot just wide. First shot on goal; expect many more.
8′
Good goalkeeping again. Sebastian Giovinco gets in behind and takes the ball past Tim Howard. The Everton keeper stays standing, however, and forces the Parma forward to dribble the ball out of play.
7′
Daniel Ogbonna has to be down quickly to head away Clint Dempsey's whipped cross. The US are looking dangerous on the counter attack.
6′
Hoffenheim's Daniel Williwms tries to create something, pinging over a cross that just fails to find the lurking Altidore. There are goals in this game tonight, make no mistake.
4′
Another chance! Maggio again down the right-hand side, and Thiago Motta's save is well blocked by Howard. The ball falls for Pirlo on the edge of the box, but his drive is well over.
3′
Some lovely movement between Maggio and Antonio Nocerino, the former breaking into the box but his pull-back is cut out. Great tempo to the game so far.
2′
First couple of touches for the blonde-haired Brek Shea, and the no.11 looks very comfortable on the ball down the left hand side. Christian Maggio could have his hands full this evening.
1′
Chance for Alessandro Matri, chasing a long ball from Alessandro Pirlo that he is very close to nicking away from goalkeeper Tim Howard. Early warning for the States.
The teams are out, led by the two captains Buffon and Carlos Bocanegra. Italy in all white, the US in dark blue with white sleeves. Tonight’s referee is Firat Aydinus from Turkey, who gets us underway.
What do you think about tonight’s lineups? Excited about the new faces on show? Tweet your thoughts to me via @woodstome, and I’ll get them up on the feed.
Couple of notable squad absentees, with Landon Donovan missing for the States through bronchitis while Mario Balotelli was not selected after some high-profile disciplinary problems at Manchester City. It looks as though the latter will need to keep himself in the headlines for the right reasons, namely his prodigious talent, in order to enter the coach’s thoughts again before Euro 2012.
Italy’s lineup has a very distinct Juventus influence upon it; five current players in the starting 11, and three that have at some point played for the Bianconeri. Should at least breed some familiarity out there. There will be a debut cap for Roma’s Fabio Borini should he be involved tonight - the Parma loanee has been in sparkling form for the Giallorossi of late.
For the US, FC Dallas winger Brek Shea will be looking to add to his growing worldwide reputation. He starts in a 4-2-3-1 behind AZ Alkmaar’s Jozy Altidore. Full lineup: Howard; Cherundolo, Goodson, Johnson, Bocanegra; Bradley, Edu; Williams, Dempsey, Shea; Altidore Bench: Guzan, Spector, Parkhurst, Kljestan, Rimando, Cameron, Buddle, Boyd.
Tonight’s lineups, then. For the Azzurri, as revealed yesterday, there are seven changes from the team that lost 1-0 against Uruguay. Gianluigi Buffon wins his 113th cap between the posts, overtaking Dino Zoff’s record and becoming his country’s second most-capped player. Meanwhile, a new youthful strikeforce is on display in Sebastian Giovinco and Alessandro Matri. They will be supported by PSG’s Thiago Motta in a 4-3-1-2 formation. Full lineup: Buffon; Maggio, Barzagli, Ogbonna, Criscito; Marchisio, Pirlo, Nocerino; Thiago Motta; Matri, Giovinco Bench: De Sanctis, De Rossi, Balzaretti, Chiellini, Montolivo, Abate, Bonucci, Astori, Pazzini, Borini.
According to the FIFA world rankings, the teams are ranked 8th and 31st in the world respectively. It is the away side, however, that has the edge on form, having won their last three games. This is the USA’s tenth game under the tenure of Jurgen Klinsmann, and by far the new coach’s sternest test to date. La Nazionale are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 1-0 defeat suffered against Uruguay back in November.
The Azzurri will remember their last encounter with tonight’s opponents fondly; a 3-1 victory in the 2009 Confederations Cup. In fact, prior to tonight’s match the USA have never beaten Italy. In a nation that is slowly embracing its ‘soccer’, however, nobody should be in any doubt of the stern test that awaits Prandelli’s men tonight.
Why, you ask? Well, with the European Championships about to begin, time is running out for those on the periphery of Italy’s squad to impress coach Cesare Prandelli. On the flip side, US coach Jurgen Klinsmann faces the side that knocked his Germany team out of the 2006 World Cup, and will be itching to redress the balance. To top it all, there have been 36 goals over the team’s ten previous meetings, so tonight we are guaranteed goals. Famous last words? I think not.
Welcome along to Goal.com’s match coverage of tonight’s international friendly between Italy and USA, from the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris in Genoa. I’m Tom Woods and I’ll be bringing you the action as it unfolds. Don’t know about you, but I’ve got a hunch we’re in for a treat tonight.
