The Merdeka Tournament final is on the horizon and the Under-23 sides of Malaysia and Myanmar have earned their spots to challenge for the trophy.
The home side boasts a perfect record in the group stage, successfully beating all comers in the form of Singapore Under-23, Thailand Selection and none other than fellow finalists, Myanmar Under-23.
The Young Tigers have appeared to be the best of the four teams in the tournament but with two of their players doubtful for the final, the Burmese are no pushovers come Saturday night.
Junior Eldstal and Wan Zack Haikal have been identified by head coach Ong Kim Swee as players that may not feature in the starting line-up for Malaysia.
However, after an impressive showing by Ong’s makeshift XI against the Thailand Selection - beating them 3-0 - Malaysia are definitely the pundits’ pick to lift the trophy at the Darul Makmur Stadium.
With Eldstal and Wan Zack doubtful, young starlets in Nazmi Faiz and Nazirul Naim would come in and bolster the midfield led by skipper Irfan Fazail.
After netting a brace against Thailand, Ong would more than likely pick Rozaimi Rahman to start upfront against Myanmar with his fine form.
The visitors on the other hand, would be welcoming back the suspended trailblazer in Kyi Lin who was sent off against Malaysia in the second round match.
Add to that the midfield presence of Kyaw Zayar Win and Kyaw Ko Ko upfront, the Burmese are more than willing to fight for an upset.
Seeing that Myanmar U23 have managed to put one past the Young Tigers in their first meeting in the tournament, revenge will be on the cards for the White Angels after they failed to hold on for the win.
As it stands, both sides already understand each other well enough to even things up in what would be a nail-biting final in Pahang.
A victory on Saturday will see Malaysia pick up their 10th Merdeka title while Myanmar their fourth. These two sides met in the 2007 Merdeka Cup final, in which, the hosts won 3-1 to lift the trophy.
