Pahang 1-1 Kelantan: Late Stewart goal denies Red Warriors

A professional Kelantan performance looked to have secured three points in this Malaysia Cup Group C opener, but a late Damion Stewart header rescued a point for Pahang

Kelantan strengthened the argument that they once again will be the team to beat in this year’s Malaysia Cup with a thoroughly professional performance at Pahang.  While they were unable to hold out for a win, with Badri Radzi’s 9th minute effort cancelled out by Damion Stewart on 85 minutes, they were the more disciplined team throughout and on this performance will surely have little difficulty in escaping Group C.

For long periods Pahang, one of the countries most entertaining and kamikaze teams, displayed exactly why they were unable to continue their blistering form at the beginning of 2013.  While they attack with pace and numbers, too often they leave their defence hopelessly exposed; both factors helping to explain how they scored a league high 36 goals this season, but conceded a whopping 32, 12 more than Kelantan.  In this match Kelantan had the look of a team that knows exactly how to execute a gameplan and will not be too troubled by conceding a late equaliser.

The home team, perhaps looking to move from their direct style of play to a more patient passing style, were behind within nine minutes as Faizol Hussain was caught in possession deep in his own half by Dickson Nwakaeme.  Although keeper Khairul Azhan saved Fakri Sharani’s ensuing effort, he undid all his good work 10 seconds later as he allowed a tame, albeit deflected, Badri Radzi effort to loop over him.

While Pahang left-back Sharizan was constantly out of position, the Red Warriors full-backs excelled in their job to stop speedy wingers Gopinathan and Surendran, helping blunt the Elephants attacking threat.  The whole defensive unit were effective in playing physically, and pressing whenever Pahang neared the Kelantan goal.  Efforts that did come in the first half, including Amirul Hadi’s snapshot from the edge of the area and Hafiz Kamal’s impressive dribble and shot were both smartly pushed behind by Khairul Fahmi.

It was on the counter attack where Kelantan were enjoying most of their success, particularly with the bulldozing Dickson Nwakaeme who’s workrate twice created efforts for Indra Putra who was unable to capitalise.  Into the second half it was the visitors who continued their grip on the game, despite the best efforts of Pahang substitute Azamuddin Akil, and on 57 minutes the intelligent Radzi was a whisker away from making it 2-0 with an instant turn and chip which a backpedalling Azhan tipped over.

On 64 minutes the home team were handed an opportunity as Kelantan forward Fakri Sharani was dismissed after a petulant kick to the side of Hafiz Kamal as both players went up for a header.  That his first booking was for simulation after a dive in the area when under pressure from Damion Stewart, further illustrated his foolishness.  However this numerical advantage was squandered 15 minutes later as R. Surendran was shown a straight red for an off the ball kick on Daudsu Jamaludin, although replays showed the full back was lucky to escape punishment himself following his calculated kick on the winger beforehand.

Just as it seemed as the game would finish 1-0, Pahang rescued a point following a trademark Stewart thumping header from a corner.  Obinna Nwaneri, who had enjoyed a commanding game before this, was at fault for the goal as for once he completely lost the powerful Jamaican.

The impressive Dickson again demonstrated his brute force in the 93rd minute as he once more stormed through the Pahang defence and fired in a shot on goal, but there would be no last minute heroics as Azhan saved well.
