Kedah - Johor Darul Takzim Preview: Canaries to bank on home support against Southern Tigers

Kedah will be facing a monumental task of taking on moneybags Johor Darul Takzim, but they will hope to be inspired by what will hopefully be a full house crowd in Alor Setar

Kedah will host Johor Darul Takzim in what should be an entertaining FA Cup second round tie at the Darul Aman Stadium. The away side definitely head into this one as massive favourites, with the wealth of quality options available to Fandi Ahmad and his coaching staff. However, playing at the Darul Aman Stadium is never an easy task and it's something that the Johor players must be wary off.

The Canaries were relegated from the Super League last year, but they are already making huge strides in their bid to return to the Super League in 2014. Marijo Tot's men are placed 4th on the Premier League table with five wins out of their first eight matches. Better still, they are only five points behind leaders Sime Darby and Sarawak FA.

Having had a disastrous campaign in 2012, several key changes were made to the squad, with the likes of Akmal Rizal Rakhli and Wan Hossein Wan Ghani all being signed up to beef up the squad. Kedah legend Nelson Sam Martin, who won the treble with them in 2007 and 2008, returned to help them in midfield while household names like Baddrol Bakthiar and Khyril Muhymeed were retained as leaders on and off the pitch.

As for Johor Darul Takzim, their season has been pretty mixed. Fans have been treated to the sublime skills of Dani Guiza on the pitch, but names like Safee Sali and Safiq Rahim are still finding their feet, despite arriving with massive reputation. They currently sit fourth in the Super League table, but their most recent performance against Felda United was certainly lacklustre, which is why it will be important for Fandi Ahmad and his men to bounce back against Kedah on Tuesday.

In the previous round, Johor contested a fierce match against Perak and did well to emerge out of the clash with a close 1-0 win, while Kedah totally outclassed NS Betaria by three goals to nil. But the Canaries' faithful will know that the circumstances will be much more delicate this time. Johor fans will be expected a victory but if there is one thing that is always special about cup ties, it's the giant-killing feat.

  • Johor Darul Takzim have drawn their last two games in the MSL
  • Johor Darul Takzim have only lost once this season, and that was to Pahang in their first game of the season
  • Kedah FA have won the FA Cup three times in their history, with the latest one being in 2008.
  • Akmal Rizal Rakhli is already a well-enthrenched figure in Malaysian football, having played for Selangor, Kelantan and Perak before returning to Kedah this season.
