Goal.om was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at the Bernabeu, where an utterly enthralling Clasico ended with both teams sharing the spoils in their semi final first leg

    Diego López Rodríguez

Made a good save on Alves, and a crucial one to deny Alba minutes before the end of the game. A little shoddy with the ball at his feet, but there is more to come from the keeper in his second spell at the club.

  • Arbeloa

    Arbeloa

Forced to put in a lot of work on the flanks to track the overlapping runs of Alves, but the Spanish fullback did not often let his concentration slip, and did a decent job of keeping up with his Brazilian counterpart. Showed absolutely no qualms in putting himself about with a few meaty challenges.

  • Raphaël Varane

Raphaël Varane Top of the Match

In contrast to the stuttering veteran Carvalho, the 19-year-old Frenchman acquitted himself extremely well in defence, making a few perfectly-timed challenges, and showing an excellent turn of pace. Blocked a Xavi shot on the line, but his best contribution was to come towards the end of the game, as he powerfully headed home a potentially priceless equalizer.

  • Ricardo Carvalho

Ricardo Carvalho Flop of the Match

The absence of a number of defensive regulars forced the Portuguese centre back into the starting lineup, but he looked his age tonight, appearing very suspect and error-prone whenever Barcelona attacked him directly. Saw yellow for a sloppy body-check on Fabregas.

  • Michael Essien

    Michael Essien

Once or twice, he caused real danger down the wing with his powerful running from deep. He defended decently, for the most part, but struggled to establish a rhythm with Carvalho.

  • Mesut Özil

    3.00

    Mesut Özil

A bit hit or miss, as he was anonymous for large spells of the game, but typically decisive when on the ball. Fed his teammates with a few sublime passes on the counter attack, and set up Varane's leveler from a corner.

  • Sami Khedira

    Sami Khedira

One of a number of Madrid players caught ball-watching in the buildup to Barca’s opener, as he allowed Messi to intercept a clearance right in front of him. Otherwise, he worked hard in midfield to close down the space in front of Barcelona, and played a role in crowding them out on a few occasions.

  • Xabi Alonso

    3.50

    Xabi Alonso

Very attentive when defending against the Barca midfield, and orchestrated the Madrid counter attacks from deep superbly. Every bit of a match on the night for the likes of Xavi in the centre of the park.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

    3.00

    Cristiano Ronaldo

Forced Pinto into an early save with a swerving free-kick, and came close to getting on the end of two dangerous crosses. His goal threat was admittedly not as potent as it should have been, but he did put in a fair bit of work defending off the ball.

  • José Callejón

    2.50

    José Callejón

His control let him down a bit in the first half, and he got his name taken by the referee for pulling the shirt of Alba. A poor clearance at the beginning of the second half allowed Barca the route they needed to fashion the opener. Substituted near the hour mark after a forgettable display.

  • Karim Benzema

    Karim Benzema

His movement to find space in the first half was incisive, and he managed to both create and get on the end of a few chances for his side, but there was to be no decisive moment at the end of his contributions.

Substitutions

  • Luka Modric

    Luka Modric

Accentuated Madrid's passing game nicely after his introduction, but not always able to provide some much needed penetration.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Barely touched the ball in his short spell on the pitch towards the end of the game.

    José Pinto Colorado

Certainly the busier goalkeeper during the opening exchanges, standing tall to deny both Ronaldo and Essien early on. Mostly left to his own devices in the second half as Barcelona dominated the ball.

  • Daniel Alves

    13
    3.00

    Daniel Alves

Benefited from the open nature of the game as he found himself with some opportunity to bomb down the right flank and provide support for his teammates in attack. Made a few good defensive plays as well, particularly a last-ditch challenge to deny Ronaldo on a scramble inside the box.

  • Jordi Alba

    3.00

    Jordi Alba

Missed poorly in the first half from a great Messi feed, but played a little within himself when supporting his team in attack. Relatively solid in his defensive duties as he did no wrong.

  • Piqué
    15
    5
    4.00

    Piqué

Saw yellow very early on for bringing down Ronaldo, but he did not let that restriction faze him for the rest of the game, performing admirably in the heart of defence to thwart Madrid on a number of occasions. A challenge to deny Ronaldo from point blank range was a particular highlight.

  • Carles Puyol

    3.00

    Carles Puyol

Though he was cumbersome when defending a few fizzed balls into the area from Madrid, the skipper still put himself about with authority, and did what he had to do with little fuss.

  • Busquets
    8
    9
    3.00

    Busquets

Formed a few intricate passing triangles with Xavi and Fabregas, and attended to his responsibilities off the ball well, patrolling the space in front of the back four. However, once or twice, the speed of Madrid's counter attack caught him out.

  • Cesc Fàbregas
    10
    8
    4.00

    Cesc Fàbregas

A tricky customer for Real Madrid to pick up, as his tendency to roam in the attacking third meant that he was able to get the ball in a number of interesting positions. Broke the deadlock with a typical run from deep and a cool finish past Diego Lopez.

  • Andrés Iniesta Luján
    16
    7
    4.00

    Andrés Iniesta Luján

His outstanding season continued with another display full of guile and enterprise out wide. Able to glide in off the flanks almost at will, and as ever, it appeared impossible to win the ball off him.

  • Xavi
    8
    11
    3.50

    Xavi

Struck the crossbar in the first half from a wonderfully flighted free-kick. Really controlled the tempo of the game in the second half, as he kept Madrid pinned back in their own half for long spells with his exemplary positioning and passing.

  • Lionel Messi
    15
    11
    3.00

    Lionel Messi

Not always able to grab the game by the scruff of the neck in his usual electrifying manner, but still linked well with his teammates and was intelligent when on the ball. He showed great awareness to facilitate his teammates for a few chances; one which Alba spurned early on, and one which Fabregas buried for the opening goal.

  • Pedro

    11
    2.50

    Pedro

As ever, his movement off the ball was willing and threatening, but he was slightly overshadowed by the likes of Fabregas and Iniesta in terms of offensive contribution. Did not find much opportunity to get a sight on goal.

Substitutions

  • Alexis Sánchez

    Alexis Sánchez

Set up a late chance for Messi with a good clipped ball in what was a positive spell off the bench.
