U17 World Cup: FIFA LOC seeks help from Sports Ministry

After the shambolic housekeeping standards at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on the opening day of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, the Sports Ministry has stepped in to help the Local Organizing Committee.

The seats were soiled and dirty and the same was the case with the washrooms at the stadium.

It must be noted that there were several checks made before the opening day of the Under-17 World Cup, including a couple by Union Sports Minister, Rajyavardhan Rathore.

“The housekeeping vendor hired by Local Organizing Committee of FIFA let down the organizers by deploying less than half of the contracted housekeeping staff at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on 6th during FIFA world cup opening. This led to a lot of inconveniences to the spectators due to the unkempt surrounding. The FIFA organizers realized the need to augment the resources and also requested the help of the Ministry,” read a statement issued by the Ministry.

“Taking into account gravity of the situation, the Sports Ministry has stepped in and SAI (Sports Authority of India) has been instructed to augment housekeeping staff to help tournament organizers to manage the crisis in the remaining matches.

“SDMC has also been requested to further augment housekeeping staff in the surrounding areas including parking lots and barricaded route to the stadium.”
