A tale of two penalties
The Group C clash between then defending champions Zambia and current kings Nigeria could best be described and remembered as a tale of two penalties. The Super Eagles badly needed a goal and that moment came when they were awarded a penalty. Chelsea’s Mikel Obi stepped forward to take it, but it was a woeful first-half effort that should have put Nigeria ahead. They found their goal later in the match though, but Zambia goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene stepped up with an inspired strike from the spot late on to earn a point for both sides. It was another lead that fell by the wayside for the Super Eagles in that group.
