Nick Mwendwa: Why FKF called off AFC Leopards v Gor Mahia derby

Football Kenya Federation President Nick Mwendwa insists the league derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia will not take place.

The match was scheduled to take place this weekend at Bukhungu Stadium, Kakamega. However, the President says the Harambee Stars friendly match against Swaziland has to take place because it will help the new coach Sebastien Migne prepare for Afcon qualifying match against Ghana.

“This is a national team preparing for international assignment against Ghana. Hull City came and played Gor Mahia, but for that to happen the match between Gor Mahia and Ulinzi Stars had to be postponed. Now, is Hull City bigger than Harambee Stars?

“We will not force AFC Leopards to release their players for the match but one thing I am certain is that the derby will not take place.”

Despite Ingwe officials insisting that the derby will take place, Goal can now report that six players from the team have already linked up with Harambee Stars training camp at Kenya School of Monetary Studies.

Gor Mahia players led by Francis Kahata also took part in the Tuesday training session under the guidance of coach Migne assisted by Francis Kimanzi.

Kenya has been slated to play Swaziland and Equatorial Guinea on Friday, May 25, and Monday, May 28, 2018. Both matches will be played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
