'Arsenal issues a dozen years in the making' - Wenger methods questioned by Campbell

Arsenal have “not addressed problems in a dozen years” and continue to pay the price, says Kevin Campbell.

The Gunners last won the Premier League title in 2003-04 when their squad of ‘Invincibles’ swept aside all before them to establish domestic dominance.

Arsene Wenger has failed to guide his team back to that point since, with a prudent approach taken to recruitment while rivals have splashed the cash.

Campbell believes too many key players have not been adequately replaced in north London, with Arsenal now lacking the necessary depth to their ranks.

The former Gunners striker told Stadium Astro in the wake of a 3-1 defeat to free-scoring Manchester City in the club’s last outing: "I think there's bigger issues in this team.

"Full backs playing centre-half for this team. I don't believe Arsenal have replaced a Patrick Vieira, Emmanuel Petit or even a Gilberto. In all those years they haven't addressed it.

“If you don't address your centre-half and you don't address your centre midfield, which is the spine of your team, where are you going?”

Wenger has attempted to improve Arsenal’s fortunes by tweaking his tactical approach, but a switch to three at the back has presented as many questions as it has answered.

Campbell does not believe that the Gunners have the players to make that system work, with holding midfielders being pushed back into unnatural positions.

He added: "I don't know where Arsenal are going. [Mohamed] Elneny played in the week at centre-half in the three, now we got [Francis] Coquelin playing there. This is Arsenal football club.

"Arsenal have not addressed the problems in a dozen years and it's telling on the pitch."

A setback at the Etihad Stadium has left Arsenal sixth in the Premier League table, 12 points adrift of City at the summit.

They will return to domestic action after the international break with a home date against north London rivals Tottenham.
