Angola Sports Ministry regrets fatal stadium stampede in Luanda

The Angolan Sports Ministry said it regrets the death of five people, including two children, following a stampede at the Estadio 11 de Novembro on Saturday.

The incident occurred after the Caf Champions League quarter-final, first leg match between Primeiro Agosto and TP Mazembe which ended in a 0-0 draw.

Fans were attempting to leave the stadium using a small exit and seven were injured in the process.

A commission of inquiry will be set up to investigate the incident. The Angolan Ministry of Sports released the following statement.

“The fateful accident is the result of a hastily and disoriented exit of the crowd in the area outside the wall of the November 11 stadium,” read the statement published by the Angola Press Agency.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports regret the deaths and addresses feelings of regret at families.”

The Angolan incident comes just a week after a fan died and several were injured in Madagascar before the Indian Ocean island’s 2019 Afcon qualifier with Senegal.

Primeiro Agosto have pledged to support the bereaved families.
