The Kenyan captain, who joined the Saints from Celtic, will be hoping to make the starting eleven when they play away to West Brom in the opening fixture

Kenya captain Victor Wanyama will wear his favourite number 12 shirt at his new club Southampton for the upcoming campaign.

Wanyama moved to Celtic in the June transfer window from Scottish giants Celtic for a record 12.5 million pounds.

While at Harambee Stars, Wanyama has been donning the number 12 jersey. At Celtic, he chose to wear the number 67 jersey in respect to the 1967 heroic Celtic FC team. Wanyama’s move to the English Premier League is expected to arouse more interest in the league from Kenyans.

The midfielder has been with Southampton for their entire pre-season period where they have only lost a single match. The new squad numbers will be used for the first time alongside their new look away jerseys when the Saints travel for a pre-season friendly against Celta Vigo this weekend.

New defender Dejan Lovren takes the number five shirt, with Jos Hooiveld having requested to revert to 26, the squad number he held during his first season with Saints.

Goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga will wear jersey number 25, Calum Chambers – who signed a new four-year contract on Wednesday – moves from 28 to 22, while fellow youngster Lloyd Isgrove takes on the 27 shirt.

Southampton will start their campaign when they travel to the Hawthorns on August 17 for a 3pm kick-off fixture.

The highly anticipated opening fixture of the season against the Baggies is one that is sure to be a popular occasion as Mauricio Pochettino’s men look to make a flying start to 2013/14 season.
