Eurosport Group has acquired the Romanian rights to England’s Premier League for the 2013 to 2016 period, with its coverage beginning on 21st December.
Romania’s Eurosport channel will broadcast live games each matchday, across all platforms.
The Romanian rights to the Premier League were originally sold to Multi Media Sports Group (MMS) in February, a deal thought to be worth US$20 million, but the broadcaster was unable to meet the payment schedule and the deal was quickly terminated.
MMS had also acquired the Spanish rights, which were then re-sold to IMG. The Romanian rights, however, remained unsold, despite initial interest from MP & Silva.
“Eurosport has invested in Premier League broadcasting rights in the past and we are extremely pleased to be working with them again,” said Richard Scudamore, the Premier League’s chief executive.
“It has an excellent track record in sports broadcasting and I am sure it will deliver a premium offering that will showcase the Barclays Premier League to football fans in Romania.”
Eurosport’s director of international relations, Valentin Macovescu, added: “This exceptional competition enhances our premium sports content offer in Romania.
“Beyond prestigious clubs and football stars, the Barclays Premier League is recognised as one of the most popular sporting competitions in the world. We look forward to bringing our Romanian subscribers this exciting league.”
