Italian Serie A club Internazionale has sealed a 10-year extension to its kit partnership with Nike.

Having first joined forces in 1998, the agreement with the US sportswear giant takes the association between the two parties through the 25-year barrier, with Inter stating that the extension “sets a new benchmark for sports marketing in Italy”. Financial terms of the new 10-year deal were not released, but Italian media reports said it will be worth a basic Eur20 million per season to the club. Nike will continue alongside shirt sponsor Pirelli as Inter’s main commercial partners.

“The new sponsorship deal further strengthens Inter’s position as one of the world’s top clubs and confirms its desire to continue expanding globally,” Inter said. “A key driving force will be the realisation of a joint project to open specialised stores, and the rolling out of a new strategy for the development and marketing of Inter-brand merchandise. Thanks to this agreement, Inter can now look forward to a bright future on the world stage with the backing of a strong brand that ensures continuity for the project.”

Following a hugely disappointing season in which the Milan club finished ninth in Serie A, Inter commenced its 2013-14 campaign with a 2-0 win over Genoa on Sunday.
