The executive committee of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced on Tuesday that it had endorsed the establishment of an ethics committee.

The committee said that the formation of the committee would assist the AFC’s “bid to root out corruption and wrongdoing on and off the pitch in the continent”. In its inaugural meeting under the chairmanship of Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the members approved the creation of a two-chamber ethics committee – one investigative and one judiciary.

Shaikh Salman said that the new committee would be set up by January next year, and the committee members also agreed to adopt a stronger ethics code to fall in line with the FIFA Ethics Code.

Shaikh Salman also praised FIFA president Sepp Blatter’s efforts to resolve issues faced by Palestine footballers. “FIFA has formed a task force, comprising FIFA President, UEFA and AFC presidents and presidents of the Israel and Palestine Football Associations, to resolve the matter. The task force will meet on September 3,” he said. The AFC executive committee has also set up a working committee to plan celebrations for the Confederation’s 60th anniversary next year.
