SABC secures host broadcaster contract for 2013 Cup of Nations

South Africa’s public-service broadcaster the SABC has secured the host broadcaster contract for the country’s staging of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations after what it described as “months of behind-the-scenes negotiations”.
South Africa’s public-service broadcaster the SABC has secured the host broadcaster contract for the country’s staging of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations after what it described as “months of behind-the-scenes negotiations”.
The deal has been concluded with the tournament due to kick-off on January 19. It also grants the SABC the rights to broadcast the 32 games both on radio and television, an agreement the company said is valued at R65 million (US$7.6 million).
Local organising committee CEO Mvuzo Mbebe said: “This is a milestone agreement for the LOC and for South Africa where the SABC becomes the host broadcaster for a tournament of this nature. The SABC has proven over the years that it has the capability and the expertise to produce and broadcast international games. The SABC has promised us a high quality and seamless audio and visual production and broadcast of the games which will be played across the five host cities. As the LOC we can assure you that we will provide an exciting platform and a tournament that will surely rise Africa to its feet from which the public broadcaster can convey to the rest of the world.”
Hlaudi Motsoeneng, acting chief operations officer for the SABC, added: “The deal with the LOC will reaffirm the SABC’s position as the leading broadcaster for major sporting events of national importance. We have proven ourselves time and again, with the 2010 FIFA World Cup being a prime example, that we have the skills and capacity to broadcast such events.”
