Heynckes: My team win the tough matches

Heynckes: My team win the tough matches

Latest Robben is a phenomenon, says Scholl Previous Next Klopp: Robben and Gomez won't accept another season on the bench

The Bayern Munich coach was pleased with his side's fighting display as they kept their treble charge on course with victory over Borussia Dortmund in the DVB-Pokal Cup

Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes was pleased with the way his side "stood up" to Borussia Dortmund after the rematch between last season's DVB-Pokal Cup finalists was settled by a single Arjen Robben goal.

"We played well, aggressively, and we stood up to an opponent who played aggressively against us," Heynckes told ARD.

"We had games like this in Mainz and Wolfsburg where the opponent really fought, and it is a sign of quality that my team wins these matches," the former Real Madrid coach added.

Bayern president Uli Hoeness joined Heynckes in praising his side and the impact of Dortmund on the quality of German football, telling Sky: "Our supremacy in Germany has been confirmed."

He added to ARD: "The team played great football today. We have done a lot for it, but we are back on top here in Germany.

"I have no problem with Dortmund. They're doing a great job. BVB have lifted us to a new level. We've seen the results today. We played perfect football."

Arjen Robben and Philip Lahm also expressed their pleasure in seeing Bayern's excellent momentum continue.

The Netherlands international has been mainly deployed as a substitute this season but offered another reminder of his qualities in netting the night's winning goal just before half-time.

"It was an important goal, not just for me, but for the team," Robben said.

"We wanted to win, we wanted to progress and we wanted to show how strong we are at the moment. We were successful with that."

Much of Bayern's success this season has been built on watertight defending and a clean sheet proved decisive again against BVB.

"We wanted to work well defensively, as in the previous weeks," Lahm noted.

"We wanted to be fast [in getting] back, because we know that [the counter-attack] is where Dortmund is very strong."
