Lyon coach Garde delighted despite narrow derby win

Michel Bastos' goal in the 65th minute was all that separated the sides in a feisty Ligue 1 affair on Sunday, with the winners going five points clear at the top of the division
Olympique Lyonnais head coach Remi Garde has revealed his delight at their 1-0 derby dispatch of Saint-Etienne.

Michel Bastos scored the only goal on Sunday as the Ligue 1 leaders extended their distance over second-placed Paris Saint-Germain to five points after 16 games, and Garde believes his 10 men - following Mouhamadou Dabo’s sending off - battled brilliantly to a deserved three points.

"Winning at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard is always a joyous occasion," he told Canal+. "I'm also satisfied that we manage to overcome having a player sent off.

"My team worked really hard, we kept our shape and showed our mental strength. At 11 v 11, we showed we'd come here with intent, even if we didn't threaten their goalkeeper much.

"I knew that Bastos could prove useful to us out wide, especially as Yoann Gourcuff had put in a lot of work, and from set-pieces.

"Three points is excellent for us but we have to build on that against Nancy. We've not created the gap and we won't get carried away.

"We're not thinking of the Parc des Princes yet but it's true we've already been to Marseille and Saint-Etienne. It will be Paris soon."
