thumbnail Hello,

With Robbie Keane ruled out of Friday's World Cup qualifier in Dublin, the Italian manager has put his faith in the Stoke City striker ahead of the West Brom man

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has given the nod to Stoke City striker Jon Walters for their clash with Germany on Friday.

Walters is expected to play up front, with Nottingham Forest striker Cox playing wide on the right. Shane Long is left on the bench for the Boys in Green, with veteran striker Robbie Keane ruled out due to an Achilles problem.

Meanwhile, Everton defender Seamus Coleman makes his first competitive start for Ireland at right-back at the expense of Stephen Kelly, with Stephen Ward keeping his place at left-back.

Trapattoni has had to contend with a number of injuries in the build-up to this key World Cup qualifier in Dublin, with Keane joining the likes of Sean St Ledger, Glenn Whelan, Kevin Doyle and Richard Dunne on the injury list.

Sunderland winger James McClean has also been ruled out of Friday’s game after reporting for international duty with a hip injury suffered in the Black Cats' 3-0 defeat at Manchester City, and will remain on Wearside for treatment.

The 23-year-old is, however, hoping to make a return to the Ireland squad for their trip to the Faroe Islands on Tuesday.

Republic of Ireland starting XI: Westwood; Coleman, O'Shea, O'Dea, Ward; Cox, McCarthy, Andrews, Fahey, McGeady; Walters.
