Bielsa: We can't hold officials responsible for defeat

The Argentine coach witnessed another loss in the Spanish Primera Division and although he feels aggrieved at Rayo's second, he insists he does not blame the referee
Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelo Bielsa has refused to criticise the referee as his side slumped to their third league defeat in a row on Friday, this time to Rayo Vallecano.

The San Mames faithful were silenced when the visitors took a two-goal lead, and although Athletic did get one back through Mikel San Jose late on, it was not enough to prevent the hosts from losing again, leaving them just six points off the relegation zone.

And despite the controversial spot-kick Rayo were awarded, which ultimately sealed the win, Bielsa refused to be drawn into blaming the ref for the defeat.

“Although the referee did not make the correct decision, he does not deserve condemnation from me,” Bielsa told reporters.

“We can't hold the officials responsible for the defeat because we had more than enough chances to win the game."

Athletic find themselves in 14th position, but the Argentine coach feels that if they had taken more opportunities that came their way, they would have got something out of the game, a feeling all to familiar for the trainer.

“It was business as usual from us,” he added. “So I don't really want to repeat myself.

“The difference between the two teams was in front of goal – we had twelve chances to score and converted one.

“They had three chances and scored two.”
