The Argentine trainer believes that a lesson in caution will be learned after the young prospect was snapped shopping in the club store of adversaries Real Madrid
The 17-year-old prospect was photographed in the club shop of city rivals Real Madrid, which spread quickly on Twitter and caused a stir amongst some sections of Los Colchoneros’ fanbase.
Simeone, however, thinks that the experience was a vital one for the young midfielder, who he hopes will learn to proceed with caution when appearing in public.
“He [Torres] must know that this environment has exposure, and you have to be careful,” advised the coach. “I think that this is an experience that will see him grow as a person.”
Torres has been touted in some quarters as an ideal replacement for departed playmaker Diego, but Simeone is refusing to throw him in at the deep end, preferring instead to ease him into first-team activities.
“If there is anyone who wants to pretend that Oliver will replace Diego, then they are wrong. We must take our time to determine the best way for him to develop into a start that will lead Atletico to success.”
When quizzed on the possible return of Diego to the Vicente Calderon, the Argentine trainer replied: “He [Diego] knows what I think of him - he's a player who gave us a lot this past season.”
Simeone took over at Atletico in December 2011, and led the club to the Europa League title the following May, defeating fellow La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the final.
