Huntelaar was not in good shape, insists Van Gaal
The Netherlands coach has explained his decision not to play the striker, saying he was not in good enough physical condition to participate
Louis van Gaal says Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was not fit enough to take part in his side's 0-0 friendly draw with Germany on Wednesday. The Schalke striker has enjoyed a positive start to the season for his club, notching eight goals in all competitions already, but that was not enough to sway his national team coach.
"Huntelaar is currently not in good shape. Of course, he did not understand when I explained that to him, it's logical. When he returns to Schalke, then he might. It's hard for him," he told reporters.
Van Gaal also explained his decision to opt for Kenneth Vermeer ahead of Tim Krul, highlighting the latter's poor form.
"Right now it is difficult to beat Kenneth. Krul has still not fully regained his form since his injury."
