The Roma captain has lamented the decision to fire the Czech coach, saying that Zeman helped him enormously with his development, and urged fans to stop insulting the players

Roma forward Francesco Totti has publicly thanked former boss Zdenek Zeman following his recent dismissal from the club, insisting the sacking is "a defeat for all" concerned.

The 65-year-old was given his marching orders following a 4-2 home defeat to Cagliari with the reins now being handed over to Aurelio Andreazzoli.

The Giallorossi playmaker praised the two-time Roma boss for his important role in his own development as a professional player.

“Mr Zeman is a coach and a man who has contributed significantly to my professional and personal growth,” Totti was quoted on his official website.

“I want to thank him with all my heart and embrace him and his staff for what they have done. This sacking is a defeat for all of us.

“For Aurelio and his staff I wish good luck. They are working right now with passion, professionalism and enthusiasm. We have targets as a group, and we want to reach them.”

Roma's recent poor form has resulted in some sections of the club's fans turning against the team and Totti has pleaded with them to show their support during this difficult time.

"Giallorossi fans, now more than ever to get out of this situation, we need your support," he added.

"Applause and criticism are accepted depending on the results, but drop the personal insults as they hurt all of us players, the team and ultimately you, too."
