Cecafa secretary Musonye turns down AFC Leopards' request to field striker Allan Wanga in tonight's Nile Basin final against Victoria of Uganda
Council of East and central Africa Football Association (Cecafa) have turned down written request by Kenyan side AFC Leopards’ to field striker Allan Wanga in the final of Nile Basin tournament.
Wanga linked up with Ingwe squad on Tuesday after holding talks with Sudanese giants Al Merreikh over a possible transfer move.
AFC Leopards’ official Timothy Lilumbi has revealed to Goal that Cecafa have dismissed the club’s request to field Wanga in the final against Victoria University of Uganda (kick-off 8pm). “We will not be able to use Wanga’s services because he did not participate in opening matches.
“We had planned to have the striker (Wanga) in starting eleven now that Noah Wafula and Bernard Mango’li are suspended but it won’t be possible. Cecafa insist that tournament rules do not allow players’ to come in after missing opening matches.”
Wafula and Mango’li were sent off during AFC Leopards’ semi-final match against Academie Tchite of Burundi which they won 2-0.
Ingwe coach Pieter De Jong is however, optimistic that the job will be completed on Wednesday. “We have enjoyed a good tournament here in Sudan and we want to cap that by winning the trophy. My players are psyched up and ready for the battle.”
