Sserunkuma netted from the penalty spot in 76th minute after US Bitam goalkeeper Stephane Bitseki was judged to have handled the ball outside his box. Apart from awarding Gor Mahia a penalty, Bitseki was also sent off for the offence in a move that appeared to give the home team a massive advantage.
Gor Mahia dominated possession for most of the first half. Sserunkuma should have scored early in the eighth minute when he raced through in an attempt to dispossess Bitseki but the big goalkeeper was too quick on the ball taking it to safety.
Godfrey Walusimbi playing his first continental match for Gor Mahia was impressive on the flanks and gave his markers plenty of trouble. Every time he had the ball it always ended up in the US Bitam danger zone.
Gor were also wasteful on dead balls. They got at least three free-kicks near the US Bitam goal but wasted all of them. In the 17th minute, the visitors came close and Jerim Onyango was forced to come out of his line to deal with Junior Aubyang's low cross which was targeted at an advancing Abdoulaye Coulibaly.
Four minutes later, Walusimbi was at it again with a perfect delivery that found no one to tap home in the US Bitam goal and it was ably cleared. With no goal conceded, US Bitam were more confident on the ball made inroads into the Gor defence.
After that first save the Gor Mahia goalkeeper was forced again to come out and this time deny Meye Axel from a header as the first half drew to a close. The second half started at a high pace with both teams clearly determined to break the deadlock but there were no clear cut chances.
But drama erupted soon after when Shabana Kenga released a long ball looking for Sserunkuma. Bitseki came out too early and handled outside his box and was punished for it as Gor went ahead from the spot.
Gor Mahia rested Rama Salim for Innocent Mutiso in a bid to protect their one goal advantage and they had at least two more chances to extend the lead but had to be content with the single goal.
