The stadia body insists Gor Mahia will not host AFC Leopards’ at Kasarani unless they confirm in writing that they will pay for previous destruction
The eagerly awaited Kenya Premier League league derby between rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards’ is yet to get a venue after Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) revealed that K'Ogalo are still banned from using Kasarani and Nyayo.
SSMB Public Relations Officer Rakki Asman has told Goal that Gor Mahia will only be allowed to use the venue ‘if they commit to paying for past destruction.’
“The ban on Gor Mahia from using Kasarani and Nyayo still stands and it is therefore, very clear that they will not be around to host AFC Leopards at either Kasarani or Nyayo on Sunday.
“It is very wrong for the club’s (Gor Mahia) officials to peddle lies that they have already settled matters with SSMB. Nothing has changed and the status quo remains.”
He added, “Our offices are open from Monday to Saturday and we have been waiting for them (Gor Mahia) to come and have the problem sorted out once and for all. Our intention is not to milk money from the club but to have them commit in writing on how they will pay the fine because their fans committed the offense.
“We are not going to allow them access the venue (Kasarani). They (Gor) have tried to use Football Kenya Federation and Kenya Premier League to have the ban lifted but nothing will change unless they meet our demand.”
Gor Mahia were banned from using the venue and fined Sh2.8 million following fans’ trouble during a league match against Nairobi City Stars.
He added that SSMB are ready to lift the ban for as long as Gor Mahia proves that they are willing to pay the fine and also give an undertaking to prevent a similar occurrence.
“We are not saying that they pay the fine at a go. If they are willing to talk to us, we can come up with an acceptable plan to see how best to deal with the situation.”
The situation now throws Sunday's derby into turmoil as only Nyayo and Kasarani have the capacity to stage a match of such magnitude.
