The young Leopards’ improved on a poor first half performance to give a good account of themselves in the second period and pick up a priceless point
AFC Leopards’ came from a goal down to force a one-all draw against Western Stima in a Group C match of the Kenya Premier League Under -19 tournament at City Stadium on Tuesday.
The young Leopards’ improved on a poor first half performance to give a good account of themselves in the second period and pick up a point in their opening game.
Western Stima started the match brightly and took early possession. Baron Jobita and Brian Omwoyo were constant threats in the AFC Leopards’ defense and Jobita had a decent shot go just wide on the half hour mark.
Stima finally opened the scores in the 44th minute through Billy Omondi who tapped in after an error from AFC keeper Charles Ochieng. The goalie had failed to hold on to a free-kick from Haron Nyakha and Omondi was at the right place to tap home.
AFC seemed to ignite in the second half and they started with good pace, though Stima never chose to sit back but rather went on attack as well. Baron Jobita had a good run on the right in the 51st minute but he shot wide under pressure from a Leopards defender.
A minute later, AFC threatened for the first time with Amos Musembi striking a free-kick that was punched out for a corner by Stima custodian. Timothy Luda had a decent chance to draw level for Ingwe, but he was slow not to get his foot on a priceless through ball from Dennis Dodo.
Ingwe finally got their scoring boots on in the 63rd minute, Dodo making the most of a collision between Stima keeper Gabriel Andika and his defense to notch home. The roaring sizeable AFC Leopards' crowd that had come on to cheer their 'Young Leopards' increased the noise and Leopards' responded by increasing their momentum.
However, they were not able to respond in kind by scoring as they were clueless in front of goal. In the final minute of the match, Timothy Lauda failed to guide the ball home from the left with the goalie down and out.
