Wanyama’s Southampton fall to Schalke in friendly

Wanyama, who joined Saints on a record signing fee from Scottish giants Celtic, played 64 minutes of the encounter before being replaced by Jack Cork

Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama featured for new club Southampton as they fell 0-2 to the Germany giants Schalke in a pre-season friendly played in Austria on Wednesday night.

Wanyama, Saints' record signing from Scottish league champions Celtic – deal worthy 12.5 million pounds – played 64 minutes of the encounter before being replaced by Jack Cork.

Another Southampton summer signing Dejan Lovren completed a full ninety minutes. Mauricio Pochettino's men had the better of the first half but could do little to prevent the clinical finishing of the Bundesliga side.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar gave the Royal Blues the lead in the 58th minute when he bundled in the rebound after a shot by substitute Christian Clemens had been saved by Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis.

It was another substitute, Joel Matip, who doubled the lead in the 69th minute at the Stadion Villach Lind when he netted from close range.

Southampton did have the chance to equalise shortly before Matip's winner but frontman Rickie Lambert was unable to convert Adam Lallana's pull back and saw his effort go over the crossbar.
