Kenya striker George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo’s Armenian club Shirak have one foot in the main draw of the Uefa Champions League after stopping Tre Penne 1-0 on Tuesday night in the preliminary round.
The former Gor Mahia featured in the entire match something that made him only the fourth Kenyan to play in the lucrative competition.
Tre Penne proved not to be such a tough opposition as Shirak made a record 12 attempts at goal before getting their lone goal.
The return match will be played on July 10 in San Marino with the winner taking on Partizan from Serbia in the second round on July 17.
Apart from Odhiambo, other Kenyan players who have featured in Europe’s top competition are Macdonald Mariga, Dennis Oliech and Victor Wanyama.
He joined Shirak after failing to keep his place first in Danish club Randers and then Azam of Tanzania.
