Blow for struggling KCB as former striker Ezekiel Odera scores the lone goal to help Thika United extend their lead at the top of the 16-team table standings
Thika United extended their lead at the top of the Kenya premiership standings after beating KCB 1-0 at City Stadium on Saturday
Ezekiel Odera scored against his former employers to give Thika three points that propelled them to 24 points after 12 matches.
After Odera’s headed goal in the first half, Thika were comfortable hitting the ball around and enjoying possession.
However, towards the end of the first half KCB, were threatening and they pushed hard for the final 10. Jacob Kelli thought he had restored parity in the 40th minute but his goal was ruled offside.
In the 43rd minute, they had a double chance to reduce the deficit. Clifford Alwanga saw his shot being cleared off the line after an intelligent pass from Peter Wainaina.
In the resulting corner, Jacob Kelli headed goal ward with Indeche out, but his header was saved off the line by the Thika defense.
KCB were forced into an early sub, Mike Oyando limping out injured and Elvis Ayany coming on for him. This partly destabilized their plans but they would give a fight in the second half.
Edwin Oduor’s thunderous shot on the hour mark was well saved by keeper Lucas Indeche with Kelvin Omondi's header from the resultant corner also suffering the same fate.
Jacob Kelli had a fine chance to draw his team level but he fired high and wide from a nice cutting pas from Edwin Oduor.
Minutes to the final whistle, Kelli again wasted another glorious chance inside the box after he turned well to beat two defenders. KCB will now have to go back to the drawing board after slumping in the form they started the league with.
