Young Africans won their 24th Vodacom Tanzanian Premier League title after a well fought 2-0 win over arch rivals Simba SC in a match played at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam on Saturday.
Didier Kavumbagu opened the scores in the 5th minute of the match with a fine header. Former Sofapaka midfielder Musa Mudde had a chance to level the scores in the 27th minute but he missed a penalty after Nadir Haroub had hacked down Mrisho Ngassa inside the box.
Yanga completed their win over Simba in the second half with Ugandan Hamisi “Diego” Kiiza scoring the second to put the match to rest.
Apart from winning the league, Yanga’s Athman “Chuji” Iddi was also named man of the match in the tie.
However, the match almost ended in a nasty way late on with Didier Kavumbagu and Simba’s Nassour Masoud clashing. The referee Martin Saanya was injured as he tried to quell the fight and he had to receive treatment on the pitch, but the match ended well however.
Yanga FC finished off the league with 60 points after 26 matches, Azam coming in second with 54 points. The defending champions Simba SC, whose season has been rocked by on and off the field challenges finished 3rd, a massive 15 points behind the winners Yanga.
Jerry Santo’s Coastal Union finished in 6th place. Santos has missed almost the tnire second leg with a knee injury. Polisi Moro, African Lyon and Toto African have been relegated from the league.
