Kenyan Premier League champions Tusker FC registered a hard earned 1-0 win over Nairobi City Stars in a mid-week league match played at the City Stadium on Wednesday.
Defender Joseph Shikokoti scored the goal in the 70th minute to lift the Brewers to sixth place on the log, just four points behind leaders Sofapaka.
Tusker FC created more chances in the match, but City Stars gave a fight in the end, but never actually managed to score one past the Brewers.
Ismail Dunga wasted a glorious chance for the Brewers in the 21st minute of the match, failing to convert from just outside the six yard area from Collins Okoth’s cross on the right.
Tusker’s striking combination of Ismail Dunga and Jesse Were failed to click on the afternoon as City Stars defense mastered the art of keeping them at bay.
City Stars also had couple of chances but Bruno Sserunkuma was a huge let down for Bye Wada’s side. Sserunkuma wasted numerous balls on the left as he was mean in most of the instances, choosing to shoot t goal instead of crossing.
Jsse Were hit the upright for Tusker in the 37th minute with a glancing header from Joshua Oyoo’s cross as Tusker were on the ascendancy in attack. Oyoo, making his first start of the season, had a lively game on the wings confirming to Tusker coach Robert Matano that he should be on the team’s starting eleven.
In the second half, Tusker started strongly in search of a goal to calm down the situation. Their three games in one week was clearly evident as fatigue took toll on them as the game wore on.
In the 62nd minute, City Stars should have made it a goal up from a swift counter, but Dennis Okoth failed to beat Keeper Samwel Odhiambo after Justus Basweti had made the delivery from the wings. Former AFC Leopards striker Jimmy Bagaye also failed to hit the rebound in, Martin Kiiza blocking off the effort.
Tusker ultimately made it count in the 71st minute, Joseph Shikokoti heading home from Joshua Oyoos’ corner. Shikokoti made full advantage of his height rising above the City Stars defense to make it one for the Brewers.
However, the goal did not deter City Stars as they increased their attacks upfront. Denis Okoth had another great effort go off the bar for City Stars after collecting a fumbled ball just inside the six yard area.
On the opposite end, Joshua Oyoo had a great run on the right but his final shot went wide after dancing past three City Stars defenders. Jimmy Bagaye also came close for City Stars with a fine shot just inside the box but Samwel Odhiambo produced a wonderful reflex save for a corner.
City Stars stay rooted at 11th while Tusker climb to sixth with two matches at hand, and four points behind leaders Sofapaka.
