Goals from Fally Mulumba, Enock Agwanda and John Baraza enabled Sofapaka come from behind to beat Nairobi City Stars 3-1 at the City Stadium and temporarily go top of the 16-team table standing.
In a match that was slow in the first half but picked in the second, City Stars should have buried the win earlier but they never took their chances.
Poor coordination at the front was their main undoing as they fluffed chance after chance. Their best chance came through Ken Tumusiime, who saw his free-kick tipped over for a corner by goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng.
City Stars should have gotten the lead in the 57th minute after a mix up between Collins Kisuya and Duncan Ochieng but the keeper saved off a header from Dennis Okoth.
However, they got to the lead in the 60th minute after Jimmy Bagaye converted from the spot after Ken Tumusiime was hacked down.
City Stars could not hold on to their lead as Sofapaka pulled one back through Fally Mulumba who headed in freely from Collins Kisuya’s free-kick on the left.
Enock Aganda, who had come on as a sub for Patrick Kagogo made it two in the 79th minute with a good run through the centre and a powerful shot into the bottom right of Ronni Kagunzi’s goal.
John Baraza made it three with four minutes left to play, tapping in from Antony Kimani’s cross. Sofapaka now have 16 points from nine matches while City Stars stick to ninth with ten points.
The visitors held on to win 3-1, to go top of the Tusker Premier League with 16-points for the meantime as they await the score from Mombasa pitting second placed KCB and Bandari.
