Kenya FA up in arms over Harambee Stars sponsorship package
Federation President Sam Nyamweya says the Sh110 million they receive from East African Breweries Ltd is a drop in the ocean since half of it goes back to the company
By Otieno OtienoFootball Kenya Federation (FKF) has raised complaints over the dismal funding it receives from current sponsors of the national team Harambee Stars, East African Breweries Limited.
The federation's President Sam Nyamweya said the Sh110million they receive from the brewers is a drop in the ocean since almost half of it goes back to the company for marketing purposes.
Nyamweya said in a statement sent to the media, that the actual money they receive as sponsorship is a paltry Sh50million over a three year period yet it cost them Sh25million just to prepare for one match.
"Currently, we are lacking in terms of funding yet we need money to take part in international matches because this help us to improve on our rankings as well as maintain fitness levels," he said.
He pointed out that their opponents in next month's World Cup qualifier Nigeria received at least Sh.400million per year from the government giving them a huge advantage.
"We need at least Sh200million per year to successfully honor our obligations. We are urging the incoming government to make the funding of sports and especially football a top priority. The sport is a huge employer internationally and can help our youths achieve big dreams for themselves."
