Tusker FC promising striker Michael Olunga has been included in Harambee Stars provisional squad of local based players to start preparations for the World Cup qualifying match against Nigeria’s Super Eagles away on March 22.
The 19-year-old striker, a former student at Upper Hill High School and a product of Liberty Academy, will be making his maiden appearance in the squad named by new Belgian tactician Adel Amrouche.
Olunga (pictured) has been impressive since joining the brewers and was in the score sheet when they beat St.Michel 4-1 in the Caf Champions League preliminary round away in Seychelles a fortnight ago.
Also recalled into the side that brings together the entire squad that traveled to Tunisia for the international friendly against Libya, is AFC Leopards striker Allan Wanga, Gor Mahia defender Edwin Wafula and Sofapaka’s Eugine Asike.
According to a source, who refused to be named, more players will be included in the team as the Kenya Premier League (KPL) continues to gather momentum.
"Coach Amrouche intends to try as many local based players as possible and for the time being those are some of the players he wants to start working with ahead of the Nigeria match. The list of the professionals will be ready afterwards."
The source also revealed that plans are at an advantaged stage for the team to pitch camp in Ivory Coast for two weeks before proceeding to Abuja for the qualifier against the African champions.
“Kenya FA is currently negotiating with sponsors East African Breweries Limited (EABL) to see if it will be possible to have the team camp in Abidjan for acclimatising before proceeding to Lagos for the decisive fixture.”
"For the time being, the team will move to residential training depending on how we conclude the national election exercise slated for next Monday and the coach plans to be staging two training sessions a day to gauge players' fitness and preparedness for coming assignments."
