The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Division One league will this season have a sponsor, Goal.com can exclusively reveal.
Multiple sources in Kenya FA have confirmed that Postal Corporation of Kenya have agreed to sponsor the league to the tune of Sh3million.
The money will mostly be used to pay referees and is expected to greatly relieve clubs of this huge expense.
A National Executive Committee (Nec) member, who asked not to be named since he is not authorized to speak on behalf of the federation, said the sponsorship will be unveiled before the league kicks-off.
"It is true that the company has agreed to sponsor the Division One league but the Kenya FA President is the only person authorized to speak on behalf of the federation. Once he returns on Friday (from Zurich where he his attending a meeting), it will be made public. This is a major boost for our clubs who have been complaining of the high cost of paying referees," said the source.
With the federation able to pay referees, standards of officiating are expected to improve since the whistlers will now be able to make independent decisions without being influenced by clubs which pay their costs.
FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya in a meeting with Division one clubs last week announced they have managed to get a sponsor though he did not give any further details. This is the first time, the league will have a sponsor and marks a major milestone for the FKF officials.
Postal Corporation of Kenya also recently returned to football sponsorship after they took over Division One side Rangers FC.
