Stars eliminated from CHAN qualifiers by Burundi's Swallows after barren draw

Stars eliminated from CHAN qualifiers by Burundi's Swallows after barren draw

This result means Kenya only has the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, in which they currently lie last in their Group and 2013 Cecafa Cup to compete for

Kenya's Harambee Stars exited the 2014 African Nations Championships qualifiers at the preliminary stages for the second consecutive time after a barren draw at home to Burundi's Swallows on Sunday.

This result coupled with a solitary goal defeat the Kenyans suffered against the same opposition in the first leg of this duel staged in Bujumbura a fortnight ago, saw the tiny East African nation progress to the next qualifying phase and book a date against Sudan after the 1-0 aggregate advantage.

The encounter played before a capacity crowd at the 40,000 seater Nyayo Stadium that included Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Sports Minister Ababu Namwamba, started on a fast paced note with the two sides trading attacking moves in the first ten minutes.

The visitors threatened first with Friston Abdul testing Kenyan custodian Duncan Ochieng with a fierce free-kick, while on the other side striking duo Wesley Kemboi and Mike Baraza failing to significantly test Arakaza Arthur manning the Swallows goal.

Forward Mike Baraza who had an off day in office, had another goal bound effort supplied to him by Clifton Miheso intercepted as the Swallows resorted to defending the precious lead.

Hamis Tambwe was then stopped enroute to goal by David 'Cheche' Ochieng in the final moments of the initial period as both teams went into the dressing room in a stalemate.

Nandwa made a quick substitution in the second half, bringing on Thika United forward Moses Arita for the off-colour Kemboi.

The Kenyan side then ran out of steam and ideas with the technical bench adding Charles Okwemba into fray in place of Osborne Monday. Steve Ndizamasabu and Yusuf Ndikumana were then cautioned as the Burundi resorted to time wasting tactics.

Not even the final substitution by Kenya that involved new Gor Mahia recruit Mungai Kiongera coming in for Edwin Lavatsa nor a sending off to Ndikumana Yusuf for a second yellow card could help Kenya salvage the tie as coach Lofty Naseem’s charges held out for a historic win and delivered the 'lesson' the Egyptian tactician had promised before the game.

This result means Kenya only has the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, in which they currently lie last and the 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup, as the remaining competitions to compete in 2013.
