Tusker coach Matano seeks for more build up matches ahead of 2013 season kick-off

Despite the newly assembled side impressing in pre-season, Matano insists he needs to play a team outside the region to gauge their preparedness
Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions Tusker FC coach Robert Matano concedes that his charges are not ready for the 2013 season.

The brewers' newly assembled squad has impressed in pre season, by winning all their build up matches against regional opponents, a scenario that has tempted the veteran tactician to look further a field to gauge his squad.

Speaking to Goal.com from Zanzibar where the Kenyan side is participating at the invitational Mapinduzi tournament, Matano revealed that the team could line up more matches.

"So far so good...I am satisfied with the performances of this team. However, I am still thinking of gauging the players against a team from outside the (East African) region and it's a shame that Egyptian side (Al Ahly) pulled out of this competition."

"At the moment, we are fine tuning the squad because their have been a host of additions. I understand its costly to invite a high profile team to play a friendly in Nairobi, but we are not ruling out that option. We are leaving nothing to chance."

Tusker have so far defeated Tanzanian clubs Simba and Yanga SC 3-0 and 1-0 respectively before hammering Zanzibar side Bandari 5-1 in the Mapinduzi Cup opener. The brewers face Simba again in the second match on Friday.

Matano, who will be masterminding the brewers' second consecutive assault in the lucrative Africa Champions league, is seeking to exorcise the ghosts of recent poor performances by Kenyan teams in the continental and regional scene.

Last year, the country's representatives in continental scene - Tusker FC and Gor Mahia - were both knocked out of the African Champions League and Confederations Cup respectively at the preliminary stages.

Tusker are primed to square off against little known Seychelles outfit St Michels in the preliminary round of the African Champions League.
