The axed include injury prone midfielder Crispin Olando, Dennis Mukaisi, Nigerian import Joseph Emeka, David Nyanzi and Andrew Murunga

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Tusker FC have axed nine players in a rebuilding exercise ahead of the 2013 season.

The axed include injury prone holding midfielder Crispin Olando, centre forward Dennis Mukaisi, Nigerian import Joseph Emeka, defender David Nyanzi, Andrew Murunga, Fredrick Ajwang, Isaac Otieno, Charles Odete and Allan Katerega.

Olando, who was a key mainstay in former coach Sammy Omollo’s triumphant squad of 2011, has been bogged down by a nagging back injury which saw him miss the better part of last season.

Team manager Willis Waliaula confirmed to Goal.com that the players were axed due to ‘football reasons.’

“The coach (Robert Matano) says that the aforementioned players performed below par, while others had limited game appearances. He (Matano) was in Uganda and has identified some players who will join us including the lucky ones from the eleven short listed from our recent trials.”

The outspoken Matano is understood to be closing in on Ugandan international Geoffrey Walumbisi who plies his trade for Ugandan league side Vipers. The other player in Matano’s radar is Gor Mahia’s utility defender David Owino.

Matano has refused to reveal the progress of the talks. “When you are courting a player, you don’t go public over it, because your rivals could be interested too, but just know we are very active in the transfer market.”
