Goals from Amri Kiemba and John Bocco in the 33rd and 54th minutes help Tanzania beat Rwanda and qualify for the semi-finals of the regional tourneyTanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars cruised to the semi-finals of the on-going Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup after edging out Rwanda’s Amavubi 2-0 in a closely fought encounter on Monday.
Amri Kiemba scored the opener in the 33rd minute taking advantage of sloppy defending to slot home before John Bocco added a second in in the 54th minute after Rwandan goalkeeper had spilled the ball in the box.
The first half had been a give and take affair with both sides going on the offensive but it was the Kim Poulsen coached side that was lucky to find the back of the net.
However, Tanzania’s Erasto Nyoni earned a referee’s booking in the 40th minute for a challenge on Dann Mirori.
Rwanda began the second half on a high note with Haruna Niyonzima coming close with a header in the 47th minute but Kilimanjaro Stars custodian Juma Kaseja rose high to nab the header.
The Amavubi had a chance to pull one back in the 63rd minute when Branabe Mumvumbi made a neat pass to Kiema whose brilliant attempt went above the cross bar when the goal posts were clearly at his mercy.
Tanzania then responded with Mwinyi Kazimoto finding out the unmarked Mrishio Ngassa who had a good chance of putting the game to bed in the 66th minute but Ngassa was denied by astute goalkeeping of Jean Claude.
Rwanda fluffed another chance that came their way in the 74th minute when ‘Jean’ Baptist’ Mugiraneza failed to connect with across from the right flank with just Kaseja to beat between the sticks.
Amavubi continued to threaten and a minute later Dann Mirori came close after rounding Tanzania’s rear guard only to see his low drive go wide.
With just five minutes left on the clock, Mirori was it again heading into the net, but his ‘goal’ was ruled for offside due to an infringement on keeper Kaseja.
