AFC Leopards have officially announced the suspension of Dutch coach Jan Koops with immediate effect. His position has now been taken over by ex-international Mickey Weche.
AFC officials confirmed that they had suspended Koops for alleged poor results. The tactician had earlier informed Goal.com Kenya that he was in the dark amidst reports that he has been relieved of his duties.
“This morning (Monday), the whole team was sent away from training by the Secretary General Winston Kitui and told to wait for further instructions by the management. Since then I have heard nothing from the administration.”
Koops has been at the helm of AFC Leopards for the past 15 months where he oversaw the transformation of the squad from a mid-table outfit to title contenders.
However, the Dutchman seems to have lost faith of the club's Executive committee, after a recent poor return of results that has seen defending champions Tusker FC and rivals Gor Mahia FC ( who were 17 points behind on the league at some point) leapfrog 'Ingwee' at the table summit, with only five league matches to play for.
Kitui had over the weekend hinted that Koops may be shown the door if he loses the match against Gor Mahia. “We have a demanding fan base and the sponsor is also asking questions regarding our performance."
"He ( Koops) claims their is interference with his work from other members of the technical bench, we are giving him a free hand this weekend (against Gor Mahia), if he doesn't perform he will have to pack his bags.”
Reputable sources claim the club has in the past one week been scouting for probable replacements of the Dutchman.
These include Koops current assistant Mickey Weche, Tom Saintfelt (Belgium), Vitor Salvado (Portuguese) and unnamed Dutch coach.
