Kenya league reverts to Tusker Premiership after EABL rolls out sponsorship package
Official: EABL finally launches sponsorship to support Kenyan league in a colorful ceremony attended by Kenya Sports Minister and officials
The East African Breweries Limited (EABL) three year sponsorship deal of the Kenyan league officially took effect on Thursday after the official unveiling with the name of the local league now reverting to Tusker Premier League.
This was after the giant beer making company, FKF, the league body and football stakeholders gave the green light to the Ksh170 million worth deal that will run from 2012 to 2015.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony at Kasarani, EABL East African General Managing Director Devlin Hainrworth applauded the milestone achievement saying that as corporate they are proud to sponsor the league.
“This marks a milestone achievement not only for us but also for the league and the Kenyan soccer. It sounds so sweet that the league will now be referred to us Tusker Premier League.”
“We have put in place measures and systems to ensure that the monies will go into the intended purpose and will be used wisely.’’
FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya who was initially opposed to the change of the name saying it was supposed to be called FKF-Premier league instead took a retreat and endorsed the same.
“We held long consultative meetings with the sponsors and agreed that the name revert to Tusker premier league. The interest of the sponsors had to be taken on board.”
“Legally the league belongs to FKF but since EABL are the title sponsors it was only natural that the league be renamed.”
Nyamweya called on football stakeholders to support the sponsorship deal and football at large for the country to realize the dream of making it to the 2014 World Cup scheduled for Brazil.
