Celtic's Wanyama to face Barcelona in UEFA Champions League Group stage

Wanyama becomes the third Kenyan to play in Champions League after his brother Mariga who won the title with Inter in 2010 and Oliech of Auxerre

Kenya midfielder Victor Wanyama’s Scottish giants Celtic FC have been drawn with Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow in Group G of the UEFA Champions League in Monaco.

Wanyama will be the third Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League after his elder brother MacDonald Mariga who won the title with Inter Milan in 2010 and Dennis Oliech who made it into the group stages with AJ Auxerre who are now in the French Ligue 2.

Wanyama now has a chance to come face to face with Barcelona dangerman Lionel Messi.

The Hoops have played Barcelona four times before in European ties, the most recent being in season 2007/08 when they clashed in the Champions League last 16.

Premier League holders Manchester City will face nine-times European champions Real Madrid. Roberto Mancini's team will also face Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

Champions League holders Chelsea begin their defence in a tough group with Juventus, while Manchester United face Galatasaray, Braga and FC Cluj, Arsenal have Schalke, Olympiakos and Montpellier.

The group stages run from 18 and 19 September through to 4 and 5 December.

Celtic reached the Champions League group stage for the first time in four years following a comfortable 4-0 aggregate victory over Swedish side Helsingborgs on Thursday.

Wanyama, who was from suspension, thundered home the second goal from a header to become the first Kenyan in history to score in Champions League.
