Kenya international winger Paul Were has been named in the 18-man AFC Leopards squad that is set to tour Tanzania for friendly matches against Simba Sports Club and Yanga respectively.

Were has missed two AFC Leopards’ Kenyan Premier League matches due to an ankle injury but after resuming training earlier in the week, coach Jan Koops has decided to include him in the travelling party.

The team leaves Nairobi for Arusha on Firday for the game against Simba SC two days later at the Abeid Karume Sadium and later take on East and Central African club champions Yanga on August 22 at National Stadium Dar es Salaam.

However, Leopards Dutch coach has opted to leave out striker Victor Ochieng who is nursing an injury he suffered from league game against Karuturi Sports.

Koops said the Tanzania friendlies will be a good build up as the club chases for its first Kenyan Premier League title since 1998.

“The friendlies have come at a good time. They will help boost the players’ instincts and give them a good preparation for the remaining nine league games,” said Koops.

Leopards lead the KPL table with 44 points from 21 games, while Sofapaka are second with 37 from 20 games.

In the squad are: Goalkeepers: Patrick Matasi, Barnabas Tiema. Defenders: Martin Imbalambala, Eric Masika, Idrissa Rajab, Edwin Wafula, Jonas Nahimana, Abbassi Kiwaalabye and Amon Muchiri. Midfielders: Bernard Mangoli, Laurent Tumba, Paul Were, Charles Okwemba and Floribert Tambwe. Strikers: Jimmy Bageya, Allan Wanga, Oscar Kadenge and Mike Barasa.
