'Tottenham can challenge for title with another top striker' - Sunderland boss Di Canio

The Mackems boss believes the north London side need to hold onto PFA Player of the Year and add another goalscorer with their rivals set to reinforce this summer
Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio says Tottenham can challenge for the Premier League title if they get another top level striker and keep Gareth Bale.

7/1 Sunderland are 7/1 with BetVictor to be relegated from the Premier League next season
Bale scored the winning goal in the game between the sides on Sunday, finishing with 21 strikes in the league this season as he picked up the Professional Footballers' Association and Football Writers' Association Player of the Year awards.

Di Canio, who scored more than 100 goals over the course of a successful career as a forward in Italy and England, believes if they reinforce up front they can challenge for the title.

"They need big, big quality - another top striker," he told reporters.

"Defoe and Adebayor can guarantee goals, but they need a top, top striker up front in my opinion. If they do get one they are in contention for the league."

The Italian also hinted that despite their strong performances this season Spurs could struggle to repeat this season’s achievements with other clubs set to spend big.

He added: "Man City and Chelsea are going to reinforce their team and Jose Mourinho will probably come back.

"But the job that Spurs have done already this year is amazing."
